When the TG&Y in Dodge City, Kansas closed, they cleared everything out starting at 10% off everything. I had seen these type closeouts before and didn’t expect any really good deals so didn’t stop in.
When it got down to 70% off, I decided to go in just to see if anything of any value was left. There wasn’t any except I was shocked to see a pile of .22 LR Remington High Speed in the case.
I have no idea what happened but suspect some employee had hid some in back and waited until the deal was too good to pass up and brought it out. It is also possible that some manager found it and brought it out. Anyway there it was.
I got out my credit card and bought 650 boxes for a little over $200. Back then the retail price on them was 99 cents.
That worked out to 32,500 rounds of .22 LR ammo. I have since added at least that much more so I must have around 60,000 rounds minus the few hundred I have fired since then.
I have a good supply of 9mm, 6.5 Swedish Mauser (most of it is Lapua Match), and 12 gauge. I have adequate supply of 20 gauge, .45 auto (right now I don’t even have a .45 gun).
I am under supplied in 8mm Mauser, 7.65 Tokarev, .380. and .40 S&W.
I have a good supply of several pistol and revolver rounds and no longer have a gun to fire it.
I will probably try to sell some of the .22 if demand keeps up.

For those who want handgun ammo for target practice, Cheaper than Dirt has boxes of 500 in the .22 LR Aguila Super Colibri. This is subsonic .22 LR, so it’s not for hunting or self-defense regardless of shot placement, but it’s good for target practice without flinching (for those young enough to flinch at a .22). It will not cycle a semi-automatic (probably), at least not my semi-auto, but it’s still good for training.
I haven’t personally verified this but I have heard that Academy stores in the Dallas area are restricting sales to one box per caliber. I only have a couple of. 45 1911s and I try to keep about 500 rounds in my ammo can. I only buy more to replace what I use at the range.
All right, no one else has taken the plunge, so to speak, I will.
I once had several thousand rounds of .22LR. One day I loaded it into my canoe and was paddling across the deepest part of Lake Pend O’Reille when the canoe capsized. Lost it all. I was fortunate to survive.
Just dang!
Cabela’s was cleaned out last weekend. Midwayusa is not even taking back orders for it. Kind of scary.
I found 500 45 Colt tonight and 250 of 45 ACP and bought them tonight for reloading. Gotta pick up when you can get it.
On January 1, I ordered 2000 rounds of American Eagle 22LR from Palmetto State Armory for about 100 bucks including shipping. It arrived yesterday.
Well, if you can’t shoot ‘em once with a .44 shoot ‘em twice with a .22...
I don’t really get it either. It disappeared off the shelves the first time 0bama got elected too. I stocked up on some after that, but still wish I had more. Found out I had a couple of rifles that liked a certain brand, which was already somewhat difficult to find.
Czech .22 sniper rifles used by the NVA in Cambodia caused more than a little confusion as it was almost impossible to place the report.
The subsonic ammo is even better.
When things go sideways .22 LR ammo will be a popular medium of exchange.

I saw this thread yesterday and then FR had the scrolling hiccup again. I tried to find .22 ammo just before Christmas and there was nothing but some rat shot.
Wally World is limiting purchases to three boxes per customer now. I even emailed some cousins in smaller towns, and there is none to be found there either.
