The American Kennel Club says the Labrador retriever is the nation's most popular dog for the 22nd straight year - for attributes that range from family-friendly pet to search-and-rescue nose.
Have a 3 year old golden. Of you get within petting distance, you are committed for at least an hour. Dog is 70 pounds of pure unadulterated love. And we still train him.
When I had my big black lab/golden retriever cross, I was often asked whether he was dangerous (his deep bark was threatening to solicitors at the front door). I told them only to small children because his fast moving wagging tail could knock them over!
Got the 12-year-old Chocolate for my kids. She turned out to be a live wire and a great Agility and Obedience dog before we got into Hunting Tests. She did well there, too.
The 6-year-old Black arrived when we got serious about Hunting Tests. She has a lot more drive than the Choc (who is half conformation bred) but she's a loon (the judges nicknamed her Psycho Ruby). At 6 she has settled down a good deal and will be running in Finished soon.
The Yellow is 3, almost 4, and a complete sweetheart - a nice compromise between the Choc and the Black. All she wants to do is make me happy. We're thinking about breeding her to a very nice Yellow HRCH in Indiana.
None of them are very closely related, although the Yellow and the Black share one famous ancestor, 2xNAFC 2xCNAFC FC CFC Ebonstar Lean Mac. But that's true of just about any high-up field dog, at least in the last 10 years or so. The Choc is descended from a different national field champion, and her full brother is a GRHRCH. But she came to retrieving late - age 6 - and certain aspects of the game were tough for her (like handling. She still doesn't like to handle.)
Oops! I thouhgt it was the hotdog.
And thats why hogs are down the list.
Amen! Silliest but intensely faithful breed. Gotta have more than one.
“But the best dog is . . .”
. . . whatever dog you own. Doesn’t matter what the rest of the world thinks. (Or you are not a real dog person.)
Lost my Australian Shepherd in late 2011 after 18 years. Still haven’t replaced her.
“I don’t know what kind of dog he is, but before I cut off his tail and painted him yellow he was an alligator.”
1. Lab (black)
2. Lab (golden)
3. Lab (chocolate)
4. Cocker spaniel
5. Irish setter
6. Collie-based mutt
My golden doesn’t bark. But same thing. Tail knocks everything over. Then the head has to get into position for a good pet and finally the paw rests itself on your arm. At that point you have him exactly where he wants you.
My Yellow Lab Toby just loved to chew. I can’t tell you how many lawnmower plug wires and pull rope handles I had to replace. All my water hoses he turned into soaker hoses.
One morning I awoke to a horrendous sound coming from the back wall of the house. I went outside to find Toby tugging so hard on the hose he was rattling the galvanized piping in the wall.
His yard mate, Blackie, a Newfie/Lab mix was the most loving dog I’ve ever had. When my Son was small, he climb up on him to take a nap.
I was expecting an article on Moosechelle
I just looked over the picture again. There are six pups so there are only two missing in the pic.
Friends got a tri-colored dog. She’s perfect, no matter what color you wear, the fur shows up clearly.
Back when I was a kid, we got reddish-brown carpet to match our Swamp Collie Golden. Of course, once he was gone, we got a black, Lab-samoyed-wolf mix. The carpet was never the same.(We didn’t know about the wolf part when he was a pup, but once he was grown — and 140 lbs — the wolf behavior was pretty clear. He was great with the family, but terrifying to outsiders. His father was a gigantic white animal with a three-foot flight radius who turned out to be an arctic wolf/dog hybrid.)
What..no love for the Shih Tzu and Maltese/Pomeranian..my poochies will be pissed oh well they are top dog in my house
