PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) -- Scottie dog has a new nemesis in Monopoly after fans voted in an online contest to add a new cat token to the property trading game, replacing the iron, toy maker Hasbro Inc. announced Wednesday.

The results were announced after the shoe, wheelbarrow and iron were neck and neck in the final hours of voting that sparked passionate efforts by fans to save their favorite tokens and businesses eager to capitalize on publicity surrounding pieces that represent their products.

The vote on Facebook closed just before midnight on Tuesday, marking the first time that fans have had a say on which of the eight tokens to add and which one to toss. The pieces identify the players and have changed quite a lot since Parker Brothers bought the game from its original designer in 1935.

Rhode Island-based Hasbro announced the new piece Wednesday morning.

Other pieces that contested for a spot on Monopoly included a robot, diamond ring, helicopter and guitar.

They were going to get rid of the shoe, wheelbarrow and iron? Those give the game character. I would have gotten rid of the dog.

I’ve always been the top hat when I’ve played. Not that it ever helped me. I always ended up hanging around Free Parking with my “Will Lower My Standards For WiFi Access” sign.

LOL!

My wife always makes deals sweetheart with the kids to ensure she goes out first and they beat me. It feels kind of like being Israel at a U.N. conference.

I don’t remember a wheelbarrow! That’s how long it has been since I’ve played!

Monopoly can be a really emotional game because once one person gets a bunch of good properties with houses or hotels, its pretty much just a matter of time before the others are bankrupt. But its torture because they know its coming but it takes a while. Unless, of course, you cheat and slip yourself a couple extra $100s when no one is looking. That’s probably why the only game I played where people get angry and where one time someone actually flipped the board over and stormed out was Monopoly.

Monopoly was a good teaching tool for young kids. They learned to count money and how to screw their relatives at the same time. ;-)

What’s an iron?

From what I understand, it's a type of golf club.

Ideas for new tokens: cellphone, Occupier mask, gay wedding couple, etc.

The iron slides most easily down the board. I like cats, but it is too much like the dog to have both. Any one who has plastic pieces lost the tokens, as Monopoly has always has metal tokens or (VERY early) wooden pieces.

What’s next? Replacing the revolver in clue with a zippo lighter?

Not old enough. Mine are all fabricated from wood.

My recollection is, the metal tokens were replaced with wooden ones in games made during WWII when all nonessential metal was diverted to arms production.
