Man's Estate Left to Actors He Never Met

A man who died last summer willed his estate to two actors he never met, leaving them an estimated half a million dollars each.

Ray Fulk was 71 when he died last July. He lived alone on a 160-acre property in Lincoln, Ill. that he inherited from his father. He had no family or children.

"He was a loner, and a lot of neighbors didn't know who he was," Behle said.

What Fulk did have, though, was an admiration for actors Kevin Brophy and Peter Barton, whom he had never met. He admired them so much that he left his estate to be split between them.

Donald Behle, an estate attorney, said he helped prepare Fulk's will around 1998, and never saw him again. Behle had helped with the estate of Fulk's father, who died in 1997.

Why did Fulk will his estate to the two actors?

"He just said they were friends of his," Behle said, who knew they were actors but did not know Fulk had never met them.

Behle is not sure why he considered them friends, but the State Journal-Register newspaper of Springfield, Ill., says he was a fan of their television shows.

Barton is known for his role as Dr. Scott Grainger in the soap opera "The Young and the Restless" from 1987 to 1993.

Brophy was in the 1977 show "Lucan." Fulk had a poster from the show on the wall of his house, according to the State Journal-Register.

Behle is currently overseeing the sale of Fulk's property, which is appraised at $1,054,000. Behle declined to say how many bidders he has but said that a sale is "imminent."

Fulk also had about $230,000 in cash and CDs.

After Fulk died, Brophy and Barton received letters informing them of the bequest.

Wow! The two actors are pretty lucky. The guy was obviously fans of their two shows. I say good for the actors and hopefully they are good people who will use the money wisely. It would be weird to receive a letter saying money was willed to you from someone you never knew. I would imagine that upon receiving the letters, both actors thought it could have been a scam.

Kevin Brophy hasn’t been in much and nothing listed at Wiki since 1998, and sounds like small parts too.

Yet, there are so many worthy charities. There’s no explaining some people.

No doubt there are many worthy charities. However, there are also a lot of charity scams—just a way of earning a living for the “directors”.

In the end, this man obviously got some pleasure from the work these actors did and decided to leave them something in gratitude. Really, much more understandable than someone to leaves $$ to ungrateful relatives.

I agree there are many worthy charities/organizations that can use the money. Unfortunately, people didn’t reach out in a positive way to this individual for whatever reason. I also agree that many relatives think they are deserving just because they are breathing.

Surely by this point in life one should be able to recognize honest charities from the rest, i.e., The Salvation Army, Saint Jude’s Hospital, The ASPCA, etc.

I don’t quite understand your statement “people didn’t reach out in a positive way to this individual for whatever reason.” Are you suggesting that reputable charities are supposed to be sending information to everyone? Some do send to those whom they think are inclined to support them financially but this guy appeared to be a recluse who didn’t make himself known to anyone.

OTOH, I (who is as typical a person as one would find) am supportive of animal help groups, such as the ASPCA, Best Friends, and PetSmart Charities, all of which are well-known to me. So, I don’t think your reservation is well-founded.

My comments on your reservations on charities, i.e.,charity scams, is included in my response to Maudeen.

If the soap opera’s had an ending instead of going 40 years, maybe they would be okay. I like some Korean melodrama’s because they don’t last forever.

You would think there might be a charity or something, a church, a neighbor, SOMETHING. How about that home for old, broke actors?

Maybe those 2 guys had roles that really affected him at one point.

Like an old animated Garfield movie on TV did for me, when Odie went to the pound and I was in the hospital during Thanksgiving. I was very affected. :p

Glad you got a laugh, and we’ll never know for sure, but think about it...old man living alone, two young androgynous looking actors? Hmmm.....
