Word For The Day, Monday, 2/11/13
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
cacophony; noun
1. harsh discordance of sound; dissonance: a cacophony of hoots, cackles, and wails. 2. a discordant and meaningless mixture of sounds: the cacophony produced by city traffic at midday. 3. Music. frequent use of discords of a harshness and relationship difficult to understand.
Etymology: 1650s, from Gk. kakophonia, from kakophonos "harsh sounding," from kakos "bad, evil" (see caco-) + phone "voice" (see fame). Related: Cacophonous.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
the Pope Benedict XVI has named a lot of new Cardinals....I imagine they are more conservative, as he is. the Conclave should be interesting.
I’m afraid I will hear a cacophany of drilling today due to an intense toothache I’ve had for several days.
that is a positive thought.
A+++ oh noooooooooooooooooo! toothaches are horrible! i blame theD!
I heard Cardinal Dolan is one of the leading contenders for Pope......though they said his being American is a major negative. We shall see. I believe we have never had an Asian Pope...hmm.
i cannot imagine an American being made pope. And i am not sure of how rigorously conservative Dolan is?
I hear you, there are certainly more conservative Bishops...I suspect they will go the traditional route with a European Pope. I am still waiting for a new bishop. Will he leave it to the next Pope or name one this month?
The guy in the White House is a Caca Phony..............
ROFLMAO
finally, Obama and the Catholic Church have something in common....both empty chairs.
I read that the bookmakers in England have the $ on a 65 yo African Cardinal from Ghana. Africa would be good, bc i think they are very conservative.
I have heard already that there is an African and Asian both as top contenders. Both very conservative. Much more likely than an American.
A+++ you have to pinky-swear that you didn’t copy offa ConorMacNessa... ; )
would be nice, too, if the new Pope was in his 50s.
In all the history i have read of the Borgia popes etc. with them needing taste-testers for food etc. if it’s as cut-throat as it was back in those days.
There are some Freepers who would expect me to be the nastiest one of all. Not!
I will pray for Pope Benedict.
I am a good FReeper! I never read anything before commenting!........I swear!..........
the way MO shovels in the food, I suspect she is BHO’s food taster.
LMAO
I hear Susan Rice is the one. ;-)
