AK-74 Vs AR-15 (Vanity)
Vanity | demshateGod

Posted on 02/12/2013 8:34:58 AM PST by demshateGod

It's about time I buy a scary rifle. I've been looking at prices on the local classified and Gun Broker and started thinking an AK-74 would give me the most for my money. I'm interested in hearing from those of you who are much smarter and informed.

5.45x39 is a good round and it's cheap, but will this always be the case? Will I even be able to get it 10 years from now?

I'm doing all I can to avoid paying panic prices but if I don't buy one soon, the money I've set aside for it will end up being used for other things.

You can still get 1080 in the spam can for 220.00. I’ve spent a considerable amount of time the last few weeks checking on this stuff. Been to every ammo selling website on the internet.

I'd suggest a Springfield Armory M1A or a Fulton Armory M14. If you simply must have a "scary black rifle" nothing beats a Springfield SOCOM.

I don't weigh in much on the AK vs. AR theories, except to point out that if you want a gun that you can fire a thousand rounds out of, forget to clean afterwards, leave uncovered in the bed of a pickup truck all through a snowy winter and still function, you want an AK.

That’s so funny cause I’ve almost talked myself into the same caliber, just because I don’t have it. I’d really like a Winchester 1885 (falling block single shot). It’s selling for $1000 on gunbroker.

I've got the SA M1A. Like everything else, it's hard to come by right now, but even in good times, the OP can get a decent occasional shooter AR (DPMS Sportical, for example) for about half what he'd pay for the M1A.

But neither platform is available at a fair price. I'd wait six or seven months.

How do you buy direct from the Russian army? I mean, if you’re not in a drug cartel, or a terrorist.

A SOCOM with all the gnarly rails would be my dream rifle. Alas! They cost $2,500!

Too late to stock up on components for this scare. I had to mail order bullits directly from the manufacturer and powder and primers are very difficult to find.

Luckily, I have the staples stashed away, I wanted to try some different loads and left the stores empty handed.

[I currently own 2 Ar’s but my next purchase will be an AK. But not until the panic dies down.]

If and when the panic dies down there could be an inventory glut of AR’s and ammo at some point. I would imagine the manufacturers are running three shifts with all the reported back orders for some of these weapons.

Ruger Mini 14 can do both ... either that or I was one lucky sob ... I lost that puppy in that horrific boating accident.

That’s hilarious. Someone should’ve asked him if they can make it in pink.

AMMO: Every caliber is now Allocated! We are looking at a nation wide shortage of all calibers over the next 9 months. All plants are producing as much ammo as possible w/ of 1 BILLION rounds produced weekly. Most is military followed by L.E. and civilians are third in line.

I guess I understand the military being first in line-what the heck is “L.E.”? Why is it all these idiot government groups (DHS etc) get ammo before we (civvies) do? Our frigging taxes are paying for these bureaucrats to have ammo. Arrghh!!

I live in Oklahoma, the reddest (non-commie-red) state in the country.

That’s great information, just what I was looking for.

Yes, and if and when our fine state of Tennessee ever craps out Oklahoma is where we’re heading.

I am increasingly getting the feeling the recent buying binge in ammo and rifles isn’t just a matter of getting in before a ban comes. It honestly feels like there is a meaningful contingent of people who are preparing for the possibility of a major civil conflict. When Americans buy enough guns in two months to outfit the entire Indian and Chinese governments combined—and that doesn’t include what was probably an off the charts January—they aren’t doing it just to go deer hunting.

Not saying I would ever want to see such a nightmare scenario, but something doesn’t feel right about all this...

I like AR10s a lot. There is not much difference in the controls or ergonomics from an AR15, they are just a bit bigger.

If you can possibly swing it, I'd pick up an FN SCAR 17s (.308 cal) or its little brother, the SCAR 16s (.562 cal).

They're the civilian versions of the US military's new battle rifle. They're identical to the military versions, except for the full auto feature.

The online reviews for these guns are outstanding. Expect to pay somewhere in the neighborhood of $2,500+ for one.
