Word For The Day, Wednesday, February 13, 2013-- irrefrangible

;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

irrefrangible [ir-i-FRAN-juh-buhl]

hear it pronounced

adjective

1. not to be broken or violated; inviolable: an irrefrangible rule of etiquette.
2. incapable of being refracted.

Origin: This Baroque era word irrefrangible derives from a negation of the Latin root frangere meaning "to break," also the root of the word "fraction."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification.
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

In any other nation a typical official like Eliav would find himself allied against the priests who insisted upon such irrefrangible law, and even he had begun to echo the warning voiced by liana Hacohen: "this Mickey Mouse crap." -- James A. Michener, The Source

But no, Kipling never forgets that Kim is an irrefrangible part of British India: the Great Game does go on, with Kim a part of it, no matter how many parables the lama fashions. -- Rudyard Kipling, Edward W. Said, "Introduction," Kim

I think your Wire Haired Pointing Griffons are an interesting breed — certainly not one that I would reject out of hand, like the Komondor, or the Puli.

A+++

To democrats, the only irrefrangible rule is that government must always grow more and more powerful and intrusive.

We call the democrats hypocrites, but they are not, for the reason you cited. Yes, on individual issues, it sounds like hypocrisy, i.e., Bush bombs--he's a war monger, Obama bombs--he's a war hero. But, taken in the framework of "if it furthers the left's agenda, it's good, if it doesn't, it's bad," they are remarkably consistent.

Congrats on being nbr 1!

So, if The Zero believes in breaking up oil-filled rocks, does that mean he will become irrefrackgible with Al Gore’s hugely profitable (but conveniently South American) oil investments?

oops, used the wrong word, must be auto correct...make that irrefrangible

I opted out of autocorrect on my iPod Touch. I read books and articles on there and if I see an interesting word, I email it to myself to use as a Word For The Day. I typed in "WFTD" in the Subject box, but it came up as "efts." Must have thought I was talking about Newt.

Al Gore is a fracking idiot. (Although he’s managed to parlay his global warming bullcrap into at least $100 million.)

I had DVR’d the movie “Bridesmaids.” I have been told, fairly often, that I have a good sense of humor. Very little in that movie struck me as funny. I found it annoying, with the gags overdone to the point of infuriation. The writers are blissfully unaware of “Brevity is the soul of wit,” and “Once is a joke.” The scene where all the girls got food poisoning and detritus was coming out of every orifice actually forced me to get up and leave the room, lest I be similarly afflicted. Yet this movie grossed (and I do mean “grossed”) 10 times what it cost to make. Apparently, I am as out of touch with the viewing public’s tastes as I am with the voting public’s tastes. Still—it was better than watching Obama.

Yes, That is the Griff. Usually their hair is not that neat. I am thinking that when properly shown, they should have some of their last meal hanging on their beard.
Great dogs, not often recognized but everyone always asks...what is that????

OMG truthy, you will think less of me for it, no doubt, but i loved Bridesmaids. it was HILARIOUS. On the flight to Rome in October, xsgirls and i would periodically tell each other that there was an Amish woman on the wing of the plane, and that she was churning butter.

Thank you! I found that movie to be whiny and childish too. The police officer was well played because he wasn't a neurotic nut like the women.

This movie I watched wasn't an award winner, but was sort of an interesting take on how those retiring in the UK can't afford to live so they move to India. It is a fairly honest account of the "assault on the senses" of that country. A fairly predictable ending but a sweet movie NOT from the viewpoint of spoiled 30-somethings.

xsboy called me around 10:30 pm last night [i had JUST dozed off after the caps game] to say that he saw one of his professors tweet that he could listen to Obama all night long. xsboy wanted a pithy response to tweet back. i said you could say that if he likes listening to Obama he must be a fan of fairytales. He used it and the guy replied that he didn’t agree with everything that obama says but that thinks he is an eloquent speaker. xsboy thought it prudent to stop the back and forth at that point. He said another one of his professors referred to AlGore as the guy who was elected but NOT PERMITTED to be president. My eyes would be rolling back in my skull routinely up there.
