The so-called morning-after pill has exploded in popularity since it was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration 15 years ago. According to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 5.8 million American women used emergency contraception (EC) between 2006 and 2010. Nearly a quarter of sexually active women ages 20 through 24 have used it.
All told, 11 percent of fertile, sexually active women said they had used EC, whereas back in 2002, the last time CDC surveyed women, only 4 percent had.
While more people are using EC, what's most interesting is who is using it and how. For instance, only 5 percent of women over 30 have used it. And most who have say they have only done so oncea rebuttal to the stereotype that the morning-after pill is enabling women to be irresponsible hussies.
EC is still a source of controversy. Last year, the Department of Health and Human Services ruled that Plan B One Step could be sold to women under 17 only by prescription, despite the FDA's determination that it is safe for all women who are old enough to bear children. HHS cited safety concerns, but reproductive rights and scientific advocacy groups accused the Obama administration of playing politics on the issue.
This data "shows the importance of expanding access to emergency contraception to all women of reproductive age," said Deborah Nucatola, senior director of medical services at Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
The HHS decision made it harder for all women, not just teenagers, to access EC. Now people get carded at the pharmacy, which makes it more difficult for women without IDor their male partnersto purchase the drug. (Any delay in accessing EC is significant, since it is most effective when used within 72 hours of unprotected sex.)
The CDC study also found major differences in its use by race and education level. While the percentage of women using EC was pretty consistent across ethnic groups, black and Hispanic womenand women with no more than a high school diplomawere much more likely to have used EC after unprotected sex. The majority of white women and women with a bachelor's degree or higher were much more likely to say they had used it as a backup method when they feared their primary method had failed.
If the CDC report is any indication, emergency contraception is becoming increasingly mainstream. It will likely continue in that direction, especially as places like Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania install EC vending machines.
Charts by Carolyn Perot.
yeah, well, if you’re a Big Pharma firm with enough money to throw around on K Street you can pretty much get the CDC to issue a report saying anything you want it to say.
It should be made available to any woman (or man) holding a Democrat Party voter registration card, or driving a car with an Obama / Biden sticker.
That depends on what the definition of 'slutty' is.
By the very definition of the word, a sexually active, unmarried female using “Plan B” could justifiably be called “slutty”. Unmarried women who refrain from such activity, could never be called that. Just saying...
It’s not making them slutty, they were slutty before they purchased the product. It is a case of preventing, after activity. If that makes sense
that is correct these studies and stuff will result in whatever the payer wishes them to say.
“Revealed: Morning-After Pill Not Making Women Slutty”
“Riiiiiiiiiiiight,” Dr. Evil remarked to no one in particular as he read the headline.
Of course, the doubtfulness of the headline in regard to the 6th Commandment and users of the morning after pill is dwarfed by the consequences of their use of it in regard to the 5th Commandment. But who worries about such trivialities as these in our advanced and enlightened modern society?
No, it's not a rebuttal. The knowledge that this option is available enables women to be irresponsible hussies regardless of whether they ever make use of this option.
She may already be a slut; but now, she could be a murderer:
If a woman ingests emergency contraception after fertilization has taken place the lining of the uterus can be altered causing the woman’s body to reject the living human embryo, making implantation impossible and the child will die. This result is called a chemical abortion; therefore emergency contraception is an abortifacient.
Exactly the comment I was going to make.
Lesbian sluts don’t use abortion pills. Just sayin’.
They were already slutty to begin with.
Emergency Contraception?
No, they aren’t slutty at all.
I can believe that since most sales are probably to guys intent on slipping a pill into the girl's breakfast.
What's it good for then?
Used properly, the pill prevents fertilization—because the sperm and egg usually take days to get together.
In fact, in a lot of rape cases the plan b is given to prevent conception—even in catholic hospitals (after a test to make sure the woman is not already pregnant.
On the other hand, I was stunned to hear about the frequency of use by high school girls that my daughter would tell us about. It is very easy to get, and there are girls who have taken them repeatedly. THAT is troubling.
Well, then, what IS? Something is. BTW, guys are half the problem.
