NEW YORK, A New York mixologist said Friday the margarita is the top-selling cocktail in the United States so it's "cool" the drink has its own holiday.
Kyle Ford, who works as brand ambassador for Cointreau -- a French manufacturer of triple sec, an ingredient in the classic margarita -- National Margarita Day was being celebrated Friday, the New York Daily News reported.
"America loves margaritas. It's the number-one-selling cocktail in the country," Ford said of the beverage, which also includes tequila and lime juice. "There's a holiday for almost everything, so how cool is it that there's one for a cocktail?"
Jenna Fagan, president of Avion tequila, said February is a good time for the holiday, as many people begin to tire of the winter cold.
"When you're having a great drink it transports you emotionally," Fagan said. "A margarita transports us all to summer, sitting on that beach with a margarita in hand."
Neither Ford nor the Daily News cited the source of the claim so it might be advisable to take it with a grain of salt.

I love margaritas.
Occasionally I would get semi-exotic; if you're in a place that puts the little onions in your martini instead of olives, you're probably south of the Mason-Dixon line and the martinis will suck, so you order a whisky sour. If it's cold outside and you can't access a good single malt, Jack Daniels and apple cider will warm you right up.
The two 'girliest' drinks I would ever admit any affinity for whatsoever were particularly pleasant for very hot days at the beach and they were simply Malibu rum and pineapple juice (tastes like suntan lotion smells) or Blueberry Schnapps in lemonade (don't knock it 'til you've tried it.)
According to legend, the margarita was invented at Hussongs Cantina in Baja California near Ensendada. The margaritas there are nothing like margaritas here. In Mexico there has no ice or slush in it. It is more like a tequila martini. It is tequila with a little triple sec and lime juice, served in a martini glass. P.S. don’t drink anything with ice in it when you are in Mexico.
A good top shelf tequila and mixing by hand, not relying on margarita mix, then serving it rocks (not slurpee-style) in a highball glass makes a very decent beverage that is not froufrou at all. Salt optional. Cuervo Gold at a minimum, Patron if you’re feeling flush.
I managed to pull off a military parachute jump while very drunk off of Margaritas, I firmly decided that drinking and parachuting don’t mix, at least not at low altitudes where everything takes place in short seconds.
As I’ve aged I like fewer and fewer mixed drinks. Just give me top shelf booze over ice.

Arguably the *BEST* margarita is found at Su Casa, La Jolla, CA. Otherwise homemade is best, if you use good quality ingredients.:)
Mexican poison....no thanks. Kentucky bourbon is American and far superior.
Did some catalog and online work for an Ayurvedic nutraceutical company there before the economy went bust, but didn’t know of that place at the time, so I missed it.
Other than making your own, it works best to get to know a bartender who knows what he or she is doing, with a well-stocked bar backing them up. They’re very willing, even excited, to try new things and have a good sense of what will or won’t work, much as a good chef would know with food.
As a for instance, I went out for the evening with an old friend, did something of a bar crawl for old times sake even though I’m completely out of the habit these days. We walked into a new place downtown out of curiosity, and studied their stock of liquors. Saw a bottle of St. Germaine, can’t say I’ve ever seen it before. Decided to try it, asked for recommendations and ended up with an awesome drink involving Patron and St. Germaine. Reminded me of a good homemade limoncello but with a kick, lol.
Perhaps you’ll get back that way one day...it’s a funky little place. They make the guacamole fresh, tableside which is kinda cool. :0P
About 30 years ago I was at the Marine Security Detachment’s house on the embassy compound at Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. It was Wednesday night happy hour and there was some serious drinking going on. I was with a bunch of CIA paramilitary hardasses, and we were downing more than our fair share of margaritas. I finally packed it in around 2300, knowing I had a tennis date at 0800. Those PM guys kept at it for a few more hours. Instead of playing tennis at 0800, they had to be at the flight line of a nearby Saudi military airfield at 0500. They were going on an early morning jump with their trainees. I don’t think I’ve had six shots of tequila in the last 30 years, and that includes two years in Mexico City and Guadalajara, the home of tequila.
