I believe goldfish are a type of carp, which live in cold water with no problems and with a whole lake to swim in continue to grow way bigger than in a fishbowl on your dresser. Mutant? I don’t think so.

The goldfish from France was pretty big. But, yeah, I have put them in our pond with Koi, they survive just fine. And they get big, even in a little pond.

When I was a kid there was a school of very large goldfish (like a foot long) that lived in the local river. I was told they originated from pet goldfish that got flushed down toilets, and had been around for more than a generation. I think they (yeah, they're carp) just get big in the wild.

That river WAS pretty polluted, tough...

You gotta love the lapdog media!

“Scientist have not yet determined if toxic wastes from Springfield Nuclear Plant are to blame.”

or . . .if Joe Biden’s big mouth is to blame.”

or . . . if BIG Gulp sodas are to blame.”

or . . . if the NRA’s heated rhetoric is to blame.”

or . . . if psychoactive drugs are to blame.”

or . . . sport fisherman are to blame.”

or . . . if (___________ fill in the blank)

If they don't know diddlely, the lapdogs need to shut their mouths and don't mention them or some possible causal circumstance. I'm sick of this sort of stuff.

Why would a power plant be to blame for polluting the water with carp?

Is the author of that book any relation to an infamous "Truth About" -series book by a similarly-named author, firstname 'Harry'?

Movies aside, I have never heard that exposure to radiation or toxic waste actually can make something stronger or larger. I have seen deformities, stunted growth and death but never something that got bigger and strong like the Hulk or the Sci-Fi movie monster.

This is what catch and release gets you. People don't fish as much as they used to.

In the 1960s, on 3 or 4 occasions I hooked goldfish while fishing for perch in the Feather River around Live Oak. I also found smaller ones when playing in recently drained irrigation ditches. In the central valley they weren't dumped for the most part (most people had septic tanks so they weren't going to go anywhere if the did get dumped.) They got loose after floods and and lived in the ecosystem until they were wiped out by bass or crappie or were fished out by kids with cane poles.

Now days in California fishing inland waters is more bother than it's worth so most people don't. As a result the goldfish have a much better chance to get established.

Naturally, the Greenies are going to carp about this with all their crappie rhetoric.

Most people don’t realize that those cute little goldfish that their kids win at the county fair are actually baby carp. They take them home and put them in a fishbowl or one of those cheap little WalMart aquariums. Eventually the kids get bored with them, and the parents realize what a pain it the butt it is to care for them. So they dump them in the nearest freshwater, either a lake, stream or retention pond. And they grow. I’ve seen orange carp in some of the local ponds as long as my forearm. And they’re not even good eating. The gators like them, though. I guess that’s why they’re not becoming a nuisance around here yet.
