Word For The Day, Monday, 2/25/13
;In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
calumny; noun
1. a false and malicious statement designed to injure the reputation of someone or something: The speech was considered a calumny of the administration. 2. the act of uttering calumnies; slander; defamation
Etymology: mid-15c., from M.Fr. calomnie (15c.), from L. calumnia "trickery, subterfuge, misrepresentation, malicious charge," from calvi "to trick, deceive," from PIE base *kel-, *kol- "to deceive, confuse" (cf. Gk. kelein "to bewitch, seduce, beguile," Goth. holon "to deceive," O.N. hol "praise, flattery," O.E.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Here is my example with WFTD.
Expect calumnies to rain forth on Bob Woodward, as he dares speak ill of the Anointed one.

No pushing at the door please!
Obama is one big walking calumny. There did I do it right?
Calulmnies on any “journalist” who dare write ill of the retiring Pope and the upcoming conclave in Rome.
Hmmm... every time Woodward starts digging presidents get nervous...seems back in the 70’s he did quite a bit of damage to one president’s reputation...hopefully we’ll get an encore performance unless 0 decides it’s his turn to be put up against the death panels when he needs medical treatment...
Rescind #3. I’m here, just not awake.
Thewon’s campaign against Mitt Romney was one massive calumny. We were denied and hones, decent president who cared about us. Instead, we got one who cares about himself. Sad.
honest
#3 should have said “Fie on any journalist who writes calumnies against the Holy Father (Benny 16) and the upcoming conclave.”
look alive, you deadbeats, and get to class : )
My homework, such as it is, was in before the ping. #WhoYouCallingADeadbeat?
OMGosh.......MO crashed the Oscars....does she fancy herself a starlet? Nothing like trivializing yourself like that. RME I quit watching years ago, but I guess thewon’s fans still watch...those low info voters.
My ping didn’t come through but I knew where to find y’all. No school today because they were planning a sheriff’s manhunt for a guy who shot at his wife and child Saturday night and he is an employee of the school district maintenance staff. While I applaud the effort to be cautious, they caught him at 10 pm and could have changed the order and said schools would be open but they said it was too late to call us. This, from the same people who call us at 5 am for snow days.
I love FR, but according to the cal;imny of the left, it is a “hate site”.
Grrrrrr
cal;imny = calumny
fat fingers this morning. eek.
Calumny
While looking this up using real electricity I found an ad for the old Calcium Carbide lamps, Cal. Luminosity, not quite the same but close enough for homework.
Then it could be Cal. to NY. Not real close but both have the right cogitation and are closer than Cal Coolige who really was cool ‘cause they put his initials on my e-mail, cc.
Obama, the master of calumny
The best since Boss Tweed, late of Tammany
But the sheeple love portions
Of lies and distortions
Along with the free phones and pageantry
I just put the book “Coolidge” on hold at the library after reading a review.
“shot at” ....I hope he missed. How horrific. This man was with children all day? Scary.
Give a shout when you’ve read some of it. Cal is probably unappreciated.
...or should that be spelt with an 'i'?
;^)
A+++ you certainly did, welcome to WFTD!
oh i hear you and agree 100%. A+++
DH stayed up till late last night listening to the scanner....there was a robbery last night at the local Best Buy distribution center....right behind it is where I take my car for repairs....they ran out the back and into the wooded areas in the freezing cold last night. County cops brought in a dog to search for them...they got the last one this morning when he came out cold and hungry. All under arrest. A van filled with lap tops was recovered. Crooks were foiled. First time someone hit the place that I have heard of.
meant to ping you.
i am hoping that Woodward is oldschool enough to have the courage of his convictions such that he will stay on this and dig it out.
A+++
A+++ now that is something different, the Barber of Seville in Italian with Russian subtitles!
A+++
WOW!
good one! A++++
A+++ yeah bc we hate liberalism/socialism!
I took the six year old Tobbe to breakfast this morning before putting him on the bus. Our waitress was the mother of one of his friends. She gave him extra bacon, his favorite. He was so excited. On the way out there were two older couples in a booth, one of the ladies stopped us and asked if she could give something to him, she gave him one of the new dollar president coins. He was excited as he had just started collecting them. I am still smiling at how excited he was about his morning treat. The timing was perfect, we got back as the bus was pulling up the hill.
so our Catholic governor is expanding abortion rights? WHY isn’t he excommunicated yet?
Will little Lukie Ravenstahl survive this police scandal? The police chief has already resigned.
That is a sweet story but I have missed who Tobbe is.....what a fun morning for him though!
Is there anyone, anywhere in a position of power that is NOT corrupt? sheesh
I used today’s word in a tweet to axelrod. Came in handy.
He’s a neighbor boy that I put on the bus in the mornings. I tutor his brother after school.
what a fun morning! please tell me that they didn’t spell that kid’s name in that odd way? why do people look for oddball things to name their kids???
The other kid is named “Not Tobee.”
thanks, i am bawling at my desk, but sent it out to everyone in my family. what a beautiful story.
looks like he may have some trouble with that bit there.
oh, yeah, it’s spelled that way. it’s his mother’s maiden name.
