This is your Turner Classic Movie channel alert!
Film fans, do not miss tonight's movie. A masculine story of a proud, American industrialist. There are some amazing quotes in this film. One in particular is where the main character chastises his wife for claiming European countries are more advanced- by stating that clean schools and borders free from soldiers are more important. And there are others. It's probably my favorite film of all time and gives a rare glimpse into the once great culture of America. Walter Huston is amazing as is the entire cast. Thinking of this film gets me a little emotional. Enjoy.
Tonight...Dodsworth(1936)), 8pm est
"A husband whose wife left him looks for new love in Europe."

With so many great movies out there, it’s hard to say - “this is my favorite movie” - but that’s what I think whenever I watch it. “
I’m still in love with Teresa Wright.(grin)
Whether that's the Pantheon or the Parthenon, I agree!
Bad spell chequer, bad, bad.
Thanks for the alert, FRiend!
With so many great movies out there, its hard to say - this is my favorite movie - but thats what I think whenever I watch it.
I love "The Best Years of our Lives"... one of my favorites. It's on TCM (Turner Classic Movies) tonight right after "Dodsworth".
Let me know what you think.
I love Maria Ouspenskaya's performance. She's not on screen for long, but it's memorable.
Saw Dodsworth for the first time tonight... both my husband and I loved it.
Thank you, Vision - great recommendation!
Fran Dodsworth was absolutely outrageous... over the top! One man after another, and she apparently didn't give a damn about her new grandchild at home. Loved the ending of the movie (I won't give it away in case some of you haven't seen it). Walter Huston was fantastic, by the way.
Maria Ouspenskaya was wonderful as Baroness von Obersdorf. Who could blame her for not wanting her son Kurt to marry an "old" floozy like Fran? LOL
Ouspenskaya has a bigger role in another great film - The Mortal Storm - she plays Jimmy Stewart's character's mother.
Stayed up late to watch the movie that ran after Dodsworth on TCM... The Best Years of Our Lives. I think I've seen it 2-3 times now... I never get tired of this movie. It's such a great patriotic, pro-veteran film. Both of my parents were WWII vets... this film really strikes a chord with me.
And one of the stars is the amazing real-life WWII veteran Harold Russell. Russell was not a trained actor, yet received two Oscars for his role as Homer Parish in The Best Years of Our Lives. One for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, and an honorary Oscar for being an inspiration to all returning veterans. He is the only actor to receive 2 Oscars for the same role.
When Harold Russell was old and in ill health on Cape Cod he sold one of his Oscars to raise some money. His benefactor let him, (nay insisted) that he keep it until he died. No telling where it is now.
And well deserved! One of the greatest moments in movies history is when Homer rips the flag off that lapel. (And the moments that follow, oh yeah!)
