SAN DIMAS (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say a shotgun-wielding 24-year-old man shot and killed one of two pit bulls attacking a woman and her horse along a trail in San Dimas Saturday.

Sheriff’s Lieutenant David Vega of the San Dimas station said officials were notified about the attack in the area of Foothill Boulevard and Walnut Avenue at 8:58 a.m.

“[The dogs] knocked her off the horse and took the horse down,” Vega said.

“One of them latched onto the horse’s upper leg and locked on. She (the rider) suffered a few scrapes,” Vega said.

The man, a San Dimas resident, fired some shots from his .22-caliber rifle into the pit bull, breaking the dog’s lock on the horse’s leg. That dog was killed.

The extent of the horses’ injuries were not immediately known.

Animal Control took the other dog into custody.

The dogs may have come from a local residence or pit bull rescue, the sheriff’s lieutenant said.

The man was not cited or arrested.

It’s obviously time to ban military style breeds of assault dogs.

He will be a police officer in a few weeks. Killing dogs is a requirement to be LEO these days.

It’s a CBS story....it was obviously an assault .22 shotgun with a 30 round mag.

And why the hell is anyone reported in the news as utilizing a firearm always “wielding” said firearm? Is that on page one of the Firearms Reporting chapter in the Journalist text book?

No shotgun here, either.

“shotgun-wielding” must have been a phrase that the other writer has been waiting to use forever, and he just couldn’t resist adding it in.

Dog attack check list.

1) Large and/or aggressive breed of dog? Yes, one of the most likely offenders - Pitt Bull.

2) Off leash, running free, >1 running free? Two of them, out on the town, looking for trouble.

3) Previous reports of violent behavior? Not known.

4) Unreasonable expectation of passivity from owner, often despite #3 above? Not known, but probable if the owner allowed them to regularly run free.

Interesting. Couple weeks back an aquaintance of the wife could have used a savior like that. 3 off leash pit bulls chased her horse into dumping her and it subsequently running into a park gate at full speed and killing itself...

This was over on Mt Diablo.

Had a horse bite my dog once. Unfortunately I wasn't armed at the time.
