Jay Leno retirement coming in 2014, Jimmy Fallon to take over 'Tonight Show' - report

If sources are to be believed, a Jay Leno retirement announcement could be coming soon. A new rumor claims that NBC is planning to announce in May that the 2013-14 television season will be Leno's last.

The Hollywood Reporter got a denial from NBC about the planned shift, but did hear from "two high-level industry sources" that the idea is to phase Leno out and Jimmy Fallon in as "The Tonight Show" host next year. He would start at the gig with a soft launch in summer 2014...

That plan worked so well with Conan....might as well try it again! Is the GOP helping with their strategic decisions? Karl?

Fallon is much better....but frankly....all the night shows stink. There was a time when there was a bit of intelligence to it...Bring back old movies...

If true, then good for Leno. He’s 62 years old, a good time to sit back, enjoy the fruits of his labor and play around with his cars and bikes.

I like the guy. He skewers everyone — Democrat and Republican. Not nearly as malicious as Letterman.

Same here. Letterman just comes off as a jerk.

I have respect for Leno in as much as he took the job knowing that for many, many years, he would be compared to Johnny Carson, the standard bearer. Leno never tried to fill Johnny's shoes or compete with Johnny's legacy, but for better or worse, and at his own risk, move the show in his own direction.

It was a classy thing to do and says a good bit about his character.

Steve Allen was the most talented of all the Tonight Show’s hosts; Johnny Carson was the best comedian IMHO.

Jimmy Fallon is incredibly talented, but your typical modern era male.. Weened on rap and in permanent ‘white guilt’ mode, constantly appeasing/placating/pandering to blacks. The way his show treated Michelle Bachmann with the ‘b!tch’ song as her intro mustn’t be forgotten. His band leader looks like Buckwheat from the Little Rascals.

Jimmy Kimmel is fairly funny and so is Craig Ferguson. They aren’t from an explicitly lefty POV. Craig Ferguson has probably the most intelligent sort of conversation with his guests.

I barely remember Steve Allen's stint on the Tonight Show. I liked Jack Paar, but I was a young schoolgirl whose parents insisted I be in bed early, so I rarely saw Paar. Carson was the “king of late night” and the moniker fit him perfectly.

YouTube has a number of Carson's bits. I have one of them bookmarked. He's a politician hooked up to a lie detector machine. It's one of my favorites.

Seems like yesterday when Bette Midler sang One For My Baby (And One More For The Road) to Johnny Carson.

Fine with me. Leno is not funny. It annoys me that he has to give the punch line of every joke twice, like we didn’t get it the first time. We got it Jay and it wasn’t funny.

Steve Allen was the originator of the Tonight Show. It was done live in front of a studio audience, mostly ad lib. Here’s a sample of one of the first shows...

Jonathan Winters’ Maude Frickert was quite a hit in the late-night TV circuit for a while. Time to re-introduce the character?
