Hippies were Satan worshipers, according to history book

Hippies were rude, dirty, Satan worshipers, according to a paragraph that apparently appears in a Louisiana state-funded school’s history book.

The book, entitled “America: Land I love” is an eighth-grade history textbook that Mother Jones reports is used in at least one Louisiana voucher school. The textbook is published through Pensacola, Fla.-based A Beka Book.

According to an image obtained at AmericaBlog.com, the passage on hippies paints a stark, unflattering image: “They went to Canada or European countries to escape being drafted into military services. Many young people turned to drugs and immoral lifestyles; these youth became known as hippies. They went without bathing, wore dirty, ragged, unconventional clothing, and deliberately broke all codes of politeness or manners. Rock music played an important part in the hippie movement and had great influence over the hippies. Many of the rock musicians they followed belonged to Eastern religious cults or practiced Satan worship.”

Hippies were Satan worshipers, according to history book

Not according to the testbook quotes in the article:
"Many of the rock musicians they followed belonged to Eastern religious cults or practiced Satan worship"
Unless my eyes are deceiving me, that associates satan worship with the musicians, not with their hippie followers.

The problem is that far too many Americans today do not understand the distinction between all, many, most.

All statements here are objectively factual, with possible exception that “many,” unlike “most” and “all” is an undefined term. Does it mean 10% or 40%?

Which might tie into whether the last statement is factually true. However, even it says, “Many of the rock musicians they followed belonged to Eastern religious cults OR practiced Satan worship.” More the first than the second, I suspect.

BTW, I have long believed that the quickest way to separate the right from the left is opinion towards “the 60s.” Everybody knows what is meant by this term. Were the 60s a net good or a net evil for America and the world? IMO a very definite net evil, but many liberals still pine for what they perceive as those longlost days of peace and love.

What the left pines for from the 1960s was the crushing of America by the adult leadership, the presidents, the Supreme court justices, the Senators and congressmen, the legislation and court decisions, it isn't joints and rock concerts that they miss, it was the power of the left and it's total domination of the reins of power of the most powerful nation on earth.

The 1930s and 1960s were eras of the left's total control of the highest levels of government.

Hyperbole is absolutely the worst thing in the entire universe. It's at least a hundred billion trillion times worse than anything else you can name. It's even that many times worse than anything else you can't name.

Sounds a bit like this guy on the left.

What is hyperbole

Not sure if you are asking me to define this word for you or whether you are actually trying to suggest that they are actually being sensible in describing '60s hippies as 'Satan worshipers' who literally worshiped the actual Devil. Like I say, ascribing imaginary vices to your opponents to bolster your argument just makes one look ridiculous and less credible when it comes to attacking their real ones. Its just common sense.

There was a program on Hippies shown on “The History Channel” maybe a year ago.

I watched most of it and was surprised when they said it had it’s start with Satanic worship. I don’t recall the details but they were pretty matter of factually saying it was so.

You will probably need a lumber stretcher. Stretched lumber usually attracts snarks.

And they couldn’t drive worth a damn. Name one hippie champion race car driver. None. Not one. They could never figure out what the clutch was for. It was those filthy, stinking hippies that did away with the “Four On The Floor” and muscle cars. They can all rot in he** with their rusty Volkswagens with burned up clutches. Jackasses thought a 4-4-2 was a telephone number.

As with everything, there was good and bad associated with the movement.

Nothing wrong with Peace and Love per se, but in many cases it was co-opted into anti-war/anti-capitalism and immorality.

I think you're exaggerating a wee bit. Maybe not.

Yes, you did interpret my comment correctly.

As far as your answer, “...they are actually being sensible in describing ‘60s hippies as ‘Satan worshipers’ who literally worshiped the actual Devil[?]”

I am not sure you actually read the statement: “Many of the rock musicians they followed belonged to Eastern religious cults or practiced Satan worship”

It ascribed some rock musicians, not hippies per se, as practicing Satan worship.

You think that’s not true?

Really? You’re going to compare acid-dropping, promiscuous layabouts to Jesus Christ? I think you may have allowed your perspective to get a little out of whack.
