Bear cubs found in box at roadside

LONG CREEK, S.C., - A South Carolina man said he and his family approached a roadside box they suspected might contain puppies and instead discovered a trio of bear cubs.

Brandon Poole of Long Creek said he and his family were driving in their truck when they spotted the box and decided to investigate, WBTW-TV, Myrtle Beach, S.C., reported Tuesday.

"I thought it was little puppies in that little box, so I got closer to it, I noticed I heard squealing so I thought it was baby pigs. I got closer and picked one up. It was three baby bears," Poole said.

Poole, who said he had previously worked at a wildlife ranch but had never held a bear in his hands before, took the cubs to the firehouse where he works as a volunteer firefighter.

"I put them in the truck with us and got up here to the firehouse and called the game warden because I couldn't let them freeze that night. It got real cold. They could have died," Poole said.

He said the incident was thrilling for his young daughters.

One of the cubs was taken to the historic Charles Towne Landing in Charleston, S.C., while its siblings were taken to the Appalachian Bear Rescue in Knoxville, Tenn.

"It felt good, I'm kind of trained to save lives and help, so it felt real good to me," Poole said.

Investigators said they do not know how the bears ended up in the box at the side of the road.

Three’s a rarity. Mom must have known she couldn’t raise them all and left them in a box. I smell a rat on this one.

I was being sarcastic - but I wouldn’t be surprised if some sort “Molesting Innocent Wildlife” allegation isn’t made against the guy before the week is out.

That struck me, too. Two is the normal litter for bears. I know a guy who killed a female bear in the early spring in northern Maine. (He was bear hunting and sat down to rest in a clearing, when a she-bear appeared on the other side of the clearing. She rose on her rear legs and began to roar, apparently intending to scare him. It worked. He shot her. Given her sex and the time of year, she probably left two cubs somewhere in the forest. Momma got a ride back to Massachusetts down the Maine Turnpike on the roof of an International Harvester 4WD small truck, to the horror and affliction of sensitive out-of-staters. This was before the days of the SUV. You had Jeep and you had IH.

First cub, "This box is too big."
Second cub, "This box is too small.
Third cub: "This box is just right."

I suspect the mother was likely killed by a poacher who couldn't bring himself to killing the cubs so he put them in the box hoping someone would find them......

No, not down here in SC. Not that some PETA type folks might not holler but the State isn’t going to charge him. We are different down here, we don’t have all the silly rules the Northern states and California have.

At least she didn’t abort. There’s a service for this kind of thing in Chicago. It’s called Merciful Sisters of Ursus. You can drop cubs off for adoption, no questions asked.

It was on lumber company land, deep in the north woods, only accessible by logging road. I don’t know if it was Indian land.
