The mayor denounced the city's department stores for their participation in a campaign to persuade the State Legislature and the City Council to defeat pending measures authorizing an increase of the sales tax to 2 per cent. Expressing surprise at their stand, he described them as "profit groggy" after "making a mint of money because of splendid conditions in New York City, notwithstanding the sales tax."
Profit groggy, eh? Haven't heard that one before. I guess it didn't catch on.
