Louisville Claims Top Overall Seed (In NCAA Tournament)

Louisville is the top seed in the NCAA tournament after a topsy-turvy season in college basketball, capped by another round of upsets over the weekend.

That other team from the Bluegrass State won't even get a chance to defend its national title.

While the Big East champion Cardinals surged to the top of the 68-team bracket released Sunday, joined by fellow No. 1 seeds Kansas, Indiana and Gonzaga, the school that won it all a year ago was left out of the field. Kentucky was hoping the committee would overlook a dismal performance in the Southeastern Conference tournament, but the Wildcats had to settle for a spot in the second-tier National Invitation Tournament.

"You've got to earn it each and every year," said Mike Bobinski, the Xavier athletic director who chaired the selection committee.

As if that's not bad enough for Kentucky fans, Louisville (29-5) gets to rub a little more salt in its rival's wounds by opening the tournament about 75 miles from campus on Kentucky's home court, Rupp Arena in Lexington. The Cardinals will face either Liberty or North Carolina State in a second-round game Thursday. Kentucky plays an NIT game Tuesday -- on the road because Rupp is taken for the NCAAs -- at Robert Morris.

We loved Willie—because he was one of us—but as far as play calling is concerned—you’ll soon find out why we called him “WTF Wille”. LOL

Thad Motta's a good coach.

I can't see Mark Few leaving Gonzaga. He saw the wringer Dan Monson went through when he left GU for Minnesota.

i don’t understand how Indiana and Kansas gets a #1 seed in the South and East regions. Memphis sports a 30-4 record which is better than them. Same for Louisville. Memphis has a better record than them, too. The Tigers should have gotten at least one of those #1’s instead of the 6 seed in the Midwest. Memphis has the second best record in the field. Guess that don’t count for much.

Yeah, Monson made a blunder leaving so quickly to go to Minnesota. If he would have stuck around several more years better opportunities would have come up for him.

If Few was going to leave he would have already done it. I can’t imagine that there is anything out there that would challenge him more than getting the Zags to a Final Four and maybe a championship.

Truly sorry about the loss to McNeese. Now you know why we called Willie T—WTF Willie.

That wasn't a loss..that was a complete total beat down..all of Tampa..students fans, the paper, and BOTH sports talk stations are absolutely stunned..and especially after the opening play for USF....

sense here though is that this is Skip Holtz' fault...Willie has no bodies to play...

We were all hoping Willie T would do well at South FL, but have all speculated he would be a “short termer”—because you all wouldn’t tolerate it like we did (we cut him slack because he was a WKU grad).

Are they all calling for his head? I don’t know where the best USF message board is to check.

We’re really happy with Bobby Petrino tho. LOL

Actually, the overall consensus at his hiring was very positive, for the following reasons:

1.The feel good story about the local guy returning home
2. The not unreasonable expectation that he'd be able to tap into the incredible talent pool here in Florida..especially Hillsborough County.
3. This is the best one. Most felt that he'd have the program turned around, and winning, in 2-3 years, and that because of his local roots, he wouldn't then jump to a better job.

Everyone is very hopeful Willie T works out for you. He’s still loved here. We were all very patient with him (time management, teaching slapping at players not arm wrap-a-round tackling, hard-headed on position assignments, some crazy play calling)—but the speculation is you all won’t be as patient because you’re down in “football is god” territory.

He does come from good stock—from the Harbaugh camp. And Jack Harbaugh brought WKU a Division 1AA national championship in 2002. I also remember when we had a home and home series with the Bulls when you all first started football (not to mention you all used to be in the Sun Belt for basketball years ago). So we all wish him and USF well.

Willie is a very good recruiter...still needs coaching/ management maturity. That’s pretty much the consensus around these parts.
