Mysterious ‘boom’ heard across region

Loud noise heard in Southern Illinois Saturday afternoon has residents puzzled

Social media was abuzz this weekend following what is begin described as a “loud boom” that was heard all over Southern Illinois Saturday.

The source of the noise is unknown and, according to some, has been recurring for the past several weeks.

Loud and mysterious booms are being heard and felt around the region. For more than a month, the noise has been compared to a sonic boom, tannerite, shotgun, dynamite or cannon. The theories surrounding the source of the “loud bangs” range from fracking to supersonic jets, meteors and even the end-times. However, an official explanation has not been given, leaving residents baffled. Wanting answers, many have turned to their local media.

“The first time I heard it, I waited to hear sirens. I dismissed it assuming I would find out what happened later on the news,” said Lori Wharton Libby. An accident was not to blame for the noise that day nor was anything on the news regarding what she heard.

Many have experienced it frequently over the past several weeks.

“We tried to put the facts together,” said Libby. “We knew it wasn’t a gun or cannon. The noise is loud enough to scare our dog under the bed. People from as far east as Harrisburg and north of Mt. Vernon have heard and felt the same noise that I described.”

The West Frankfort Police Department said that they have not received any complaints regarding the issue.

Further investigation finds these unidentified noises are taking place all over the country. Around the beginning of January people from Utah, Massachusetts, Alaska, Tennessee, Indiana and Florida have been contacting their local authorities and news media outlets regarding unexplained loud booms.

Maybe the New Madrid fault is getting ready for some activity.

A double “boom” will be caused by something supersonic - e.g., a meteor or a high performance fighter. As an old flight test type, we still do supersonic flights over designated areas in the country during acceptance and repair testing. Perhaps not normal wx patterns (temp distributions/etc) in the area allowed the sounds to travel further than normal...be amplified....etc.

If it’s a single boom, it’s created by something else...perhaps portions of the universe collapsing due to liberal imbecility.

Some of these, I believe, are what we used to call years ago, jet jockeys hooking it up.
Not all, but some.

I’ve been in a few earthquakes, but the only one that was accompanied by a ‘loud boom/crack’ was the one in Red Hampshire months ago...that was why my initial reaction was ‘explosion’...

Roofgoat,

F117s are retired (except for a few at Nellis). Are you sure that’s what you saw 2 of today?

So the tunneling is under Missou andsouthern Illinois now. Soon it will be completed coast to coast, well, at least coast to Denver and New Mexico and Utrah where the underground bunkers are being stocked.

Haha!!

Really though...so much of Southern Illinois was subject to underground coal mining many years back that there is no telling what is going on down there. If a support column “pops” it would stress another one...then...pop.

We lost our Jr. High to mine sinkage when I was a kid...there was always the occasional “sink hole” closing a road.

Here in Indiana a year or two ago, we had about a 5 earthquake. I was at my kitchen table and heard a loud boom as it happened.

Prairie, what does mil still have that is bat shaped?

Last year one bat flew over. Just today it was 2.

I get everthing here. God forbid if our area took up arms we’d be decimated (lol).

But yes, 100% bat. I believe they are coming from Whiteman (sp?).

The sound of sonic booms we get will give you a heart attack. First time we got one I just moved here and my Dad and I were painting the new house. BOOM! Dad said, “WTF was that dynamite?”

Have experienced the booms twice in lifetime. Both times a quake followed within a few months. It sometimes comes down to a guessing game but am in full agreement with you.

Interesting.

I’ve experience a few such unexplained booms and/or shaking over the last 40 years. There never seems to be an explanation.

Skyquakes, so called, have been going on since forever.

Those interested in the peculiar phenomenon, the cause of which remains unknown, should take a look at the books of John Keel, especially “Disneyland of the Gods”.

I don’t know if you saw it, but we had a big explosion in a neighborhood in Indianapolis a short while back. It happened a ways south of me at about 11PM. Well, I heard it and thought it was a storm. It wasn’t. It was a criminal act and the people responsible have been charged.

My point is, how far and wide did people hear this?

If there is no other logical explanation, it could be pre quake activity.

I think you are correct. No proof, only experience to type from. I’m southeast of you by about 400 miles. Since the eastern fault was active last year it stands to reason, with logic, the Big Fault Line in the middle of the country was put under stress. (imho)

We hear large, earth-rattling booms in our area over much of the year. It’s proceeded by large, ominous, dark clouds and bright flashes of light across the sky. I think they call the big booms “thunder”.

This is the New Madrid fault area... and mysterious booms like this are not uncommonly heard before an earthquake hits. So maybe that is an explanation, time will tell.
