Word For The Day, Thursday, March 21, 2013 – discursive
dictionaries ad nauseam | 21 March 2013 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

discursive(dis-KUHR-siv) adjective
1. Jumping from topic to topic; rambling.
2. Proceeding logically, using reason or argument rather than emotion.

Example sentences:
"The book is discursive, gently meandering down the River Thames."
--Three Men In A Boat; Northern Echo (Darlington, UK); Sep 20, 2012.

"Obama's penchant for discursive explanations has bothered no constituency more than his base, whose members see in his sometimes professorial tone a lack of passion for the cause at hand."
--Scott Wilson; In Arguing for Firearms Restrictions, Obama Points to Constitution; The Washington Post; Jan 17, 2013.

Etymology:
From Latin discurrere (to run about), from dis- (apart) + currere (to run). Ultimately from the Indo-European root kers- (to run), which is also the source of car, career, carpenter, occur, discharge, succor, and caricature. Earliest documented use: 1599.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Little Johnny, a third-grader who is the youngest child in an Italian-American family in Brooklyn, remarked: “I couldn’t hardly learn to do printing, so how do dey expect me to learn discursive writing crap.”

Discursive

Dis means no respect like “Ya’ll dissed my dog so ya’ll gonna get a full body massage with an ugly stick”.

Cursive is like saying bad things about Joe's wife, Oleo, calling her a thespian anna horticulturist.

So discursive is kinda like discussion and if you don't what cussin’ is, come to my house and the back of my momma’s hand and her combat boots will gently instruct you.

One of the big issues with the GOP is it’s complete inability to deal with the discursive assault upon them (and the Nation) by the Dems and their liberal lying leader. They shovel out an attack on issues, and then another, and still another before the GOP has ‘found’ their voice on the first topic. The GOP has no idea how to deal with a blitz attack, and still don’t. I hate to admit it, but it’s an effective strategy against a party who are already unnerved that the Press will say something bad about them.
And when the hell has the Press said anything good about the GOP?
With the likes of Boehner and McConnell and the rest of the old clowns, we’ll not get a upper hand in the national discourse, because they’re napping instead of fighting.

OMG...they do NOT teach cursive or even printing anymore. No time with the added curriculum they are trying to teach. They figure with computers and spell/grammar check who needs it? No grammar is taught, either. I am SHOCKED. I correct spelling and teach grammar with a workbook I found at Sam’s. My 5th grader is appalled that I make him do extra stuff. Yes, I am smarter than a 5th grader.

It’s an adjective, not a noun, but you get an A+ for the graphic. :-)
