My Mom had her picture taken by Edward Land, a friend of her boss, over 60 years ago.
The entire office was stunned when Mr. Land pulled the film out of the camera, coated it with a noxious chemical, and waited as my mother’s image appeared.
Turned out that she was the first woman to have her portrait taken with a Polaroid Prototype Camera.
I think she still might have that picture...somewhere.

Robert Cornelius Is it just me, or does he look surprisingly similar to David Tennant ("Doctor Who")?

Speaking of time travel through photography, my favorite photographs are the early and mid 1930’s German color photographs of the rise of Hitler before WWII. Many were taken on excellent film, far superior to anykthing we had at the time, and they show almost exactly what things looked like then, making them almost vividly current. Nothing works quite as well as color for that.

If she does have it, and provenance that it is the first, it would be worth tens of thousands of dollars to a collector.

Mom’s funny.
She also has Joe and Dom DeMaggio’s autographs, Ted Williams, The entire 1941 Red Sox, The first Polaroid portrait, and dozens of unpublished photos of the Pacific Theater in WW2, taken by my Dad.
But she won’t part with any of it!
LOL.

I think Cracked.com did a story on this some time back. They include the first known photo of someone "flipping the bird"
It was pitcher Charley "Hoss" Radbourn
