I think times have changed. Unless you have a hatchery nearby.....maybe someone ships them....I’m sure cruelty issues pop up.

Found this m/o place called efowl...how cute is that?

My sister lived in Berlin for years and had a Easter egg tree every year

We've spent hours and hours working on them. Has been a good thing to do during this cold weather.

She so adorable....she was with me for a few days and she woke up at 5AM to work on them, by herself. I came downstairs and there she was...working away! She's wonderfully responsible with the open candle flame and using the intense, special dyes, which are a potential disaster.

They are easy to color. Nothing cruel about it.

My chicks come in next month, I cannnot wait! Any one want some old layers? Nice personalities!

It's nice to have traditions....and pass them down.

The colors have meaning, as do the designs which are very symbolic.

Neato!

Our family seems to have more traditions associated with Easter, than it does for Christmas.

I'd kill for some real authentic Babka!

I know they are easy to color, and not harmful.

From the NYT: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/02/us/dyeing-easter-chicks-raises-concerns.html?_r=0

Is this a German thing?

Don't know, but I am German (heritage) and yeah....we had an Easter Egg tree....NOT like THIS gentleman's tree..but yep.

Blowing out the egg was quite fun. Ugh. Poking the holes without breaking the shell was REALLY a chore. :)

but none of these ‘traditions’ are Biblical and have nothing to do with the death and resurrection of Jesus.......

I’m glad you enjoyed it. We are fortunate, in our area, have a place to go to get supplies; The Ukrainian National Home in Hartford; otherwise we have to go to Surma, NYC. M/O is another option, but I like to *see* what I’m going to get. :)
