A 22-year-old Utah man was killed while swinging from a rock arch in a stunt made popular by YouTube. Grand County sheriff's officials say Kyle Lee Stocking, of West Jordan, died about 3:30 p.m. Sunday, after hitting the ground below the 140-foot-tall Corona Arch near Moab. Sheriff's Lt. Kim Neal told The Salt Lake Tribune the length of rope from the arch was miscalculated and sent Stocking swinging into the ground as he went under the red sandstone formation.

That’s right, it’s not the rope swing that kilt ‘im!
Outstanding!
“Always best to do a test run with a tyre or other moderately heavy object tied to the end of the rope.”
I bet he did not bother to calculate and subtract his own height into his measurements of the rope.
When I went through Army Basic at Fort Leonard Wood, back in February of 69, the Drill Sergeants had a term for that bag full of stuff.
They called it a “Blivet.”
I have found the term applies to many situations and people - especially lately.
When asked to comment, noted film star Wile E. Coyote had this to say: “Been there.”
And the strechyness of said rope
Yup.
Or, he told the guy at Home Depot to cut him 130 ft. of rope and they Home Depot thought he said 150 ft. of rope.
Great lawsuit!
Damn metric system.
A little first-semester college physics reveals that - neglecting wind resistance - he would have been going about 67 miles per hour at the point of impact. Assuming he was off by 5 feet in his measurement, the rope would have made an angle of about 2° compared to vertical. Furthermore, his velocity would have had a vertical component of about 0.1 feet per second at the point of impact... his fanny would have been moving almost 70 mph though.
Of course, if there was anything obstructing his path that was harder than a pillow, we’d be talking a Wile E. Coyote kind a situation.
You better know your rope before you jump
that 100’ line may become 110’ under load
the difference between a thrilling jump

Be sure to max the video quality and turn up the volume.
We can’t get tyre’s around here.
We have to import them from England.
Stoopit.
I’m actually going to make that same jump later thus year but, I’ll be doing with a group who is experienced......
Oh! .... I won’t be the 1st jumper.
Might go second though....

They kept mentioning about not dying and also using a bag of rocks on the end of the swing to test it before anyone tried it.
I was thinking the same thing. Forgot to figure in the stretch. Wonder if the video from his Go Pro survived?
Darwin Award candidate twice over. Those arches were created by a geologic process. There’s a reason they’re arches and not solid rock. There’s a video on youtube showing the collapse of the bottom of one of the arches in Arches National Park one my wife’s and mine favorite national parks. There’s no warning...just a collapse of tons of rock. If you’re underneath, it’s curtains. Or if you’re swinging from a rope.
Like bungee jumping without a bungee.
Yep. A local kid in my old neighborhood tried something similar with a home made bungee cord and a jump from a railroad trestle. His body was found face down, with about three feet of excess bungee cord piled atop his back. Moment of extreme clarity must have occurred at about 24” prior to impact.
Sounds like "Baracks"
