The Trailer and Poster for Roland Emmerich's White House Down

With the success of Olympus Has Fallen this past weekend, the onus is on Roland Emmerich and Sony to prove that their own White House invasion movie White House Down, starring Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, is up to the task of coming out after that and still feeling fresh.

In order to show their hand, Sony threw an official launch party to give a couple hundred lucky fans the first look at the trailer and eight minutes of footage, with Jamie Foxx and director Roland Emmerich on hand at New York's Regal Union Square and Tatum piped in via satellite from London.

They answered a few questions and showed the teaser trailer (which you can watch below) with one major noticeable difference being that this attack comes from within with Tatum and Emmerich likening it more to a coup then a foreign invasion, Tatum drawing parallels to the way the country is currently split between Red and Blue States. (The teaser opens with a great Abraham Lincoln quote which is cut in a way that makes it feel like the normal text we might seen in a teaser trailer.) Foxx amused the fans with his Obama impression while stressing that he is not playing President Obama in the movie.

I don't follow these things closely, but my understanding is that Olympus Has Fallen involves the white president being "unavailable" because of a terrorist attack, and so two strong black characters take control and rescue the country. And I believe Whitehouse Down involves a strong black character rescuing the country.

Perhaps I am too sensitive, but in the Age of Obama, I am really tired of the message that white people do nothing but screw up Civilization -- what have we ever done, anyway? -- while one can always count on the nice folks from Africa to turn everything alright, usher in peace and harmony and build thriving cultures which show the world what real Civilization looks like.

I saw some interviews with Roland Emmerich around the release of The Patriot. It may have been hype for the movie, but as a German, he did seem to have a sincere outsider's fascination with the founding principles (and principals) of the United States.

So sorry. I remember the days when shows like "The Mod Squad" would have a the pretty white girl, and the handsome white kid, and the experienced white cop -- and the tough black guy who provided muscle if any of the crooks needed a beatdown. I always thought such casting was pretty demeaning.

Today we have Acting President Morgan Freeman, and Head of the Secret Service Angela Bassett -- and some white guy who provides muscle if any of the bad guys need a beatdown.

We've come a long way.

Factually true although this is constantly hidden or deliberately not discussed by the media-’civl rights’ alliance. The last (and third) attempt to get the Emmit Till murder investigation revived was torpedoed by the county DA who carefully stacked the Grand Jury to get a ‘no bill’. Sounds like a standard John Grisham evil whitey ‘conservative’ racist politicians using insider clout to oppress the ‘poo black folks’ doesn't it ? The problem with that scenario is that the DA is a youngish female (shock) who happens to be black (horror). The grand jury was mostly black and the folks who seemed mostly curious about reopening the case were white. Finally, why was this done? It seems one of the people present and very possibly the unknown older black male that helped lure the naive Emmit to the secluded area where the Milan's and other murdered him is likely the father of the state representative for the area. This young fellow is a comer in the Mississippi Democrat Party and is very popular with cross race reach. He is thought to be a good shot at getting a House seat some day. So there you have it classic Mississippi politics with a big difference in the players but the same rules applying.
