FLAMES TRADE IGINLA TO PENGUINS FOR FIRST-ROUNDER, PROSPECTS
Jarome Iginla's tenure with the Calgary Flames has come to an end.
The team announced that it has dealt Iginla to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for college prospects Kenneth Agostino and Ben Hanowski as well as Pittsburgh's 2013 first-round draft pick.
Iginla has scored nine goals and 13 assists in 31 games with the Flames this season.
Holding team records for goals, points and games-played, Iginla's time with the Flames comes to an end in the final year of a five-year deal he signed prior to the 2008-09 season worth an average annual value of $7 million.
Sometimes I don't get these trade-deadline moves. Iginla's got nine goals and 22 points this season, so he's clearly way past his prime. I don't see how he makes a huge impact for a team that already has a ton of depth up front, and was leading the league in goals scored even before this trade.
Is that worse than Bird Flu?
How is it treated?
Considering how little they gave for Iginla, I don’t think it was a mistake. Yes, he is old, but he he’s got a lot to offer beyond the scoresheet, and I think he’s one of those players which has a another level for the playoffs.
When I read the headline, I thought this was a story about Antarctic Water Fowl, and that they were being plagued by some new epidemic.
Then I read the article, eh?
Ray Shero—got a checkbook and gonna use it!
I’m kinda neutral on Iginla...but just WOW on Murrow:)
Not ALOT of news released on the Flower (really hard hit Tuesday night when TK was pushed into him). That’s about the only worry right now. Imagine when Geno is back and LeTang is 100% :)
He looks like a good fit for a third line right winger, with Cooke and either Sutter or Vitale.
I trust Bylsma will find a spot for him.

Iginla press conference coming up on NHL Network at 12:30
Whew, I thought this was about a bird disease........
To be fair...he plays on a team, and his reduced production could be a reflection of the generally poor play of the whole team.
But, yeah, I did wonder just how much he’s worth at this point.
This year, Penguins' goalies are better than Osgood + Ranford, so they should be the slight favorites (vs. Chicago in the finals). Injuries (Letang, etc. ) are the only question mark.
I don’t think he’s as far past his prime as the stats indicate. He’s a one man gang in Calgary, they’ve got no depth, everybody knows stop Iginla and you stop the team. Hard to put up good numbers then. I don’t expect him to light up the board when he gets to Pittsburgh, but I bet there’s an improvement in his stats. The more you can force opponents to pick their poison the better all your players play.
It speaks alot to the Pens organization (from the top down) that really first rate players are WANTING to come to the Burgh.
I have a couple friends on Twitter (who wouldn’t know Pgh Penguin from a Pixar animated one) but they were really impressed about Fluery bringing the bullied middle schooler (and his mom) up from MD for a game last week. The kid was interviewed wearing his shirt & M-AF & Pens front office did the rest...really quickly.
And Kunitz just scored!!!
Jarome Iginla is making is Penguins debut today!
The newly acquired winger will be in the Penguins lineup when they host the New York Islanders at CONSOL Energy Center at 1 p.m.
Iginla, who arrived in Pittsburgh late last night, will be moving to left wing and skating with Evgeni Malkin and James Neal.
Thanks for the ping. Amazing game all around. Poor Sid. Not good.
Iginla , left wing.
I was all excited that this was a long awaited upgrade for Crosbys right wing but unfortunately Blysma sees Sid as a glorified grinder. The only upgrade coach wanted to see was on Malkin’s line. One of Iginla or Neal played out of position. Now that Crosby is sidelined that might be a permanent situation for the playoffs.
The plate they put in Crosby’s jaw is supposed to make him heal faster. Rosey scenarios of him being back in three or four weeks are being floated around. I hope they’re right but I don’t see how a guy scheduled for more surgery this week is going to come back that fast.
Yeah, it doesn’t look good for an early return for Sid.
But the Pens have done this scenario before- like the last season.
Seems like one of the “Two Headed Monster” members is always getting hurt, leaving the other to take the lead.
Lucky for them Shero picked up some hired guns to help out!
Stars just traded Jagr to the Bruins.
