One of the most polysemous words in the English language is "fair." I looked carefully through the several dozen meanings associated with the word, but never found Obama's: "take wealth from those who earned it and give it to those who didn't."

fair 1 (fɛə) — adj 1. free from discrimination, dishonesty, etc; just; impartial 2. in conformity with rules or standards; legitimate: a fair fight 3. (of the hair or complexion) light in colour 4. beautiful or lovely to look at 5. moderately or quite good: a fair piece of work 6. unblemished; untainted 7. (of the tide or wind) favourable to the passage of a vessel 8. sunny, fine, or cloudless 9. informal ( prenominal ) thorough; real: a fair battle to get to the counter 10. pleasant or courteous 11. apparently good or valuable, but really false: fair words 12. open or unobstructed: a fair passage 13. ( Austral ) (of handwriting) clear and legible 14. informal a fair crack of the whip , a fair shake of the dice , a fair go a fair opportunity; fair chance 15. fair and square in a correct or just way 16. fair do's a.equal shares or treatment b.an expression of appeal for equal shares or treatment 17. fair enough! an expression of agreement 18. informal ( Austral ), ( NZ ) fair go! come off it!; I don't believe it! 19. fair to middling about average — adv 20. in a fair way; correctly: act fair, now! 21. absolutely or squarely; quite: the question caught him fair off his guard 22. dialect really or very: fair tired — vb 23. dialect ( intr ) (of the weather) to become fine and mild — n 24. archaic a person or thing that is beautiful or valuable, esp a woman [Old English fæger ; related to Old Norse fagr , Old Saxon, Old High German fagar , Gothic fagrs suitable] 'fairness 1 — n fair 2 (fɛə) — n 1. a travelling entertainment with sideshows, rides, etc, esp one that visits places at the same time each year 2. a gathering of producers of and dealers in a given class of products to facilitate business: a book fair 3. an event including amusements and the sale of goods, esp for a charity; bazaar 4. a regular assembly at a specific place for the sale of goods, esp livestock

That was it, hadn’t heard about the Muslims at that point...that’s what upset me the most. They do this during a mass....why would they bring in folks not even Catholic? At least the women were Catholic.

She was upset because he was the POPE...not some liberal American priest. HE should KNOW this would make priests less obedient...blah, blah...the Pope should have some dignity...blah, blah......I tuned her out as DH was responding.

Polysemous

Polly-See-Mouse (spelling is just opinion), No more mouse. And forget those silent “e”s if they can't speak up.

Interesting comment because now they can delve into the infallibility of his interpretation of the faith. If he is the true authority on all things Roman Catholic, and he chose this action to assert himself as such or to promote discussion, what will be the outcome?

Pope isn’t infallible on all things just on certain ones. Someone more conversant with the ins and outs of catholic heterodoxy could tell you which, but this was most assuredly not one in which he is considered to be infallible. it’s a rule/rubric, and as head of the Church he is able to change those. the fact that he went ahead and disregarded this one, instead of first changing it, is what gives traditionalists pause.

You said it yourself. At the price of a re-imaginig of a ritual, Francis has made earned the Church a good image and made it a bit more popular.

It doesn’t mean we have to ordain women next. A does not have to follow B.

I see it like my pastor talked about Saturday night. Francis wants all of us in the Church to show Christ through our actions. Mother Teresa didn’t care if she helped Christian or Hindi.

By going out to the world and showing the desire to serve all, he makes a real statement.

That is the way it was described to me after 13 years of Catholic school and being raised in the church until my late 20s. That was what was taught by my priests and my family, who went to Jesuit schools (before they went a little nuts in their interpretations). Is he the authority of the church on earth or not?

that is true. doesn’t make the failure to follow a rubric of the Church a cause of concern, for all of the reasons i mentioned. and like i said— Benedict spoke of a smaller and more faithful church. so the Catholic church at it’s happy slappiest is POPULAR, well liked by those who have no intention of joining or following the strictures with which they disagree.

There is a better argument against altar girls than against female participation in this once a year event. I know you don’t like them, but they are here. It’s about picking battles and being able to show the difference between dogmatic areas and others.

Yes, Francis should change the rubrics rather than flout them. But you know that that isn’t something he can do in a week. (Well, he could, but the pope doesn’t usually exercise his authority like that.)
