Can someone help me come up with the name of a piece of music?

I'm trying to come of with the name of a piece of music. I have very little to describe it. I heard it being played on a classical station the other day, but it's not classical music, I don't think. It's weird, creepy, dream like music. I believe it was used in a funny commercial in the last couple of years. I think the people are lethargic in the commercial. It's dream like music. A creepy dream. If I could come up with the commercial, I could come up with the music. HELP ME!!!

Most of the music of 2001 and The Shining is creepy and dreamlike. Ditto, with a ton of other movies, TV shows, and commercials. Not enough info, unfortunately.

I probably still have that letter that U2’s management sent back to me telling me the name.

There was another one I liked in the 80’s that was used in a wine commercial and also The Year of Living Dangerously but it wasn’t on the soundtrack because it wasn’t by Maurice Jarre. It was by Vangelis come to find out. It took me a long time to finally find that one.

You are not going to believe this. I have the letter right here in front of me in a my old school records album. I went right to it. This is creepy. I’m going to scan it and send post it.

Yeah I’m familiar with the Shining music. Not from there. I wish I had more clues to give. Thank you though.

Here's the letter. The postmark on the envelope is 1985. My senior year in high school. See this is a problem that has plagued me my whole life.

Do you remember whether it was performed on acoustic/conventional instruments or if it made use of electronically generated sounds? Was there a vocal component?

I can’t help but think of theme music from Doctor Who or Outer Limits (or even Twilight Zone, but surely you’d not be asking if that were it). There must be a dozen TV shows either from PBS (maybe even Carl Sagan’s Cosmos?) or Sci-Fi serials from the 60s-80s which had themes that could fit this description.

If it possibly may have been classical, then Danse Macabre might be another candidate because of its intrinsic creepiness and slightly comical quality—although I can’t imagine it being associated with lethargy.

I know you already said no to someone else who mentioned the Blue Danube. It’s the first thing that came to my mind as well, which is a perfect match for lethargy and dreaminess thanks in part to it’s use in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Oh, I also have a vague, nebulous recollection that there might a clip of instrumental music vaguely fitting your description that was played along with Pigs in Space sketches on several episodes of the Muppet Show?

Of course there are some smart phone apps and websites that have a tool for you to use a microphone and basically hum the melody so that their system can search for matches. I’ve heard that such programs are surprisingly sophisticated and capable.

Do you have a rough estimate of what time period the music originated from?

There are some musicians that used to be categorized as New Age or Eclectic that I think produced a lot of tracks roughly fitting your description. You might consider Andreas Vollenweider or Vangelis (Famous for Chariots of Fire, but also did some “quasar” sounding stuff particularly on their Albedo .39(?) alblum) or maybe the Mannheim Steamroller or Mark Isham or Shadowfax or Wendy Carlos and the Moog (famous for A Clockwork Orange soundtrack and some of the Original Tron soundtrack).

Of course there’s also Daft Punk, who recorded the soundtrack for the 2011 Tron film.

Maybe something here will send you down a path that will jog a memory that will get you a bit closer.

I hear ya, at least today there is some hope unlike days gone by when we would spend hours of wasted time trying to remember a song or learn its title/artist

Calling the station is the best chance you’ve got. For future reference if you don’t have it, the iPad, etc. App Shazam IDs songs for me when my iPad is nearby. Not sure its database might have a “Classical” sounding song, but it might (it lacks alot of Oldies).

Anyway......”that song is drivin me crazy”

Yes, probably have to figure out the station and call them. See my letter above. That was from 1985. Trying to figure out the Theme from Harry’s Game by Clannad. I had to write to U2 and wait to get a letter back. It took weeks! To find the Vangelis music from the Year of Living Dangerously I had to write to the ad agency that did the wine commercial.

Bartender asks: What is the name of the song? Drunk answers, it's "I love you so F'ing much I can't Sh_t."

:) LOL! Yea, he should refine the title a bit.
