I have nothing sprouting outdoors yet-it’s been pretty cold most of the time.

I do have some spinach and corn sprouting indoors. I have never tried this with corn before. I am hoping to get a jump start on the corn so that I can beat the heat/drought season and get some heirloom corn this year.

Fresh foot of snow in the past 24... another 6 inches expected Sunday. just when we thought the thaw was here...

Warming up the grow lamps, starting some seeds this weekend. Looks like a late May planting season again... goes with the Mn turf!

When I was bootlegging the commercial pig in the back yard, she got some corn that passed right on through and corn plants were growing in the area that had been her pen (after her tasty demise). I transplanted those into the big garden without a problem.

Love that miniature corn for Asian dishes - but the cans are so expensive. I read up on it and apparently it is normal corn just picked very early while the ears are ‘miniatures’. So I experimented with a small row last year but the bugs got to it.

Will give it another shot. Gardening is great for the grandchildren too - it encourages them to appreciate and even eat the veggies once they understand how much work, science and effort is involved. Home grown veggies are valuable in so many ways.

I'm finally going to start some seeds this weekend. Our high today was 38 degrees, and the last couple of weeks have been extremely windy, so trying to work out on the deck was impossible. Trying to work on the kitchen table would have been a total mess. I'm a little discouraged, but with my husband helping out, we should get the job done. Oh, and I forgot to get markers for my little pots so that I'll know what's growing (hopefully) in each one. It's been years since I did anything but direct sow or buy transplants.

I'll have to take pictures this year. I've never done that previously, so this could be either a lot of fun, or a resounding public disgrace. :)

Corn should be okay, as long as you can minimally disturb the roots. It is just another grass; and rice, wheat, and the others are often started in flats, then transplanted individually by hand, something I do not have the time & patience for.

When I plant corn, there’s always some ‘holes’ in the rows, and I fill those with seedlings that would otherwise be thinned, and they always grow fine, after a droopy day or two.
