Microsoft pulls Patch Tuesday security fix.

WINDOWS-7 USERS:

Microsoft is recommending an update released on Patch Tuesday be uninstalled.

reported incidents of the "blue screen of death" after installation.

Microsoft released two critical security updates and others rated as "important" for Windows and Internet Explorer as part of its latest round of Patch Tuesday updates.

However, a number of Windows 7 users have reported issues with security update 2823324, which is part of security bulletin MS13-036.

MS13-036 was meant to fix three privately disclosed flaws and one publicly disclosed flaw in an NTFS kernel-mode driver related to the elevation of privileges when a user is logged in. However, once installed, security update 2823324 -- part of the bulletin -- may produce a "STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}" problem for users. The error occurs early in the startup process, and no Memory.dmp file is created.

As a result, Microsoft has temporarily pulled the patch from its security bulletin while the issue is being investigated.

The Chinese stole it and the Russians have already hacked it.

I posted this on the TGO Thread last evening, but thought it should get wider notice on this MS-hosed file.

I deleted mine easily, and it’d caused no problems on any of my 2 HP desktops or HP laptop. After running clean-up and disk optimization, it ‘seems’ to run a tad faster. YMMV.

Microsoft’s instructions start with insert the Windows installation disk. Why didn’t they give equal billing to the F8 option since many, if not most PCs, no longer ship with an install disk? Also, when the fix is released, will it be on automatic and what effect will that have on machines where the patch has not been removed?

Just things to think about.

That’s if your machine won’t start; below those instruction is the simple manual removal via CP or Command Prompt. All my machines came thru my former Family Farm Corp’s IT people, so I have install and OEM disks.

Good points, though.

Question: I have the same update (KB2823324) but I am on Windows Vista. Since the knowledge article only lists versions of Windows 7 and Windows server, do I need to uninstall this update? (My computer has been rebooting normally since the patch.)

Well, I went in and uninstalled the specific update and rebooted. This laptop was still running normally so I had to override my usual “if it ain't broke, don't fix it” stance. When it came back up, it was real slow so I ran Advanced System Care and all is normal now.

I'll try it again later on a desktop.

I went to an earlier restore point and everything worked fine. Win7 updated last night (Friday). That update was probably their fix.

Any chance they can patch Windows 8 into Windows 7?

Terrible news for my company laptop.

A laughing matter for my home PCs running Linux.

It wasn’t affecting my units, of Dad’s, but I uninstalled it anyway. I have’t had a BSOD since Win95/98.

Unfortunately this is not really a joke.

Yet we are using Chinese companies to such an extent now, China has overcome America to become the world’s number one exporting country.

We are giving away the future, to a communist giant.

You are right it is not a joke. Most of the references here are to individual home computers. The company I do consultation for had security patches go out to all of their installed base. Instead of the units rebooting according to a reboot schedule, the patch forced a reboot. Some came back up, some did not. Service calls going out all over the country for “dead” units that failed to boot back up. Cost a fortune.
