Movie for a Sunday afternoon: "The Thrill of It All"(1963)

Today's feature is a classic comedy featuring one of my favorite movie couples: James Garner and Doris Day. Garner's a successful obstetrician whose wife(Miss Day) becomes a star of soap TV commercials and the chaos that ensues. Carl Reiner's quite funny as a hammy TV actor while Kym Karath(Gretl from "The Sound of Music") is as cute as can be as Garner and Day's daughter. Scripted by Reiner("Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid") and directed by Norman Jewison("Fiddler on the Roof"), this is a funny, clean comedy and my pick for the best of Doris Days 1960s comedies. It's also interesting to watch from a modern-day perspective in that the film's perpsective(much to the annoyance of feminists and collectivists) says that if the family can afford for the wife to be a stay-at-home mom with the kids, it's best that she does so. Not a politically correct message by any means. Enjoy.

Unfortunately my mother gave me James Garner’s autobiography to read. He’s a flaming Democrat & a jerk besides. He’s always been one of my favorites, but no more. We watched another of his movies not too long ago & I just couldn’t enjoy it.

I knew he was a Democrat. But Doris I believe is very much a Republican.

That’s true.

One of the stories Garner told was being approached by a group of Republicans to run for office - as a Republican. He was highly insulted. But it tells me why we have so many troubles with R’s in office. How many are really just D’s who were willing to change party affiliation just to get in there?

True. Though it is interesting that Republicans would ask Garner to run for office. I can’t imagine any Republicans asking the likes of Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon, Sean Penn, etc., to run as a Republican for office. From most of the roles I’ve seen Garner in, the average viewer wouldn’t have any idea about his offscreen political views one way or another if he didn’t know already. And that’s how it should be IMHO. To paraphrase Laura Ingraham concerning movie stars and their views on the world, “shut up and act.”

Interesting. And certainly refreshing for a Hollywood star. In one way though it’s not too surprising. She was always a very hard-working woman who I’m sure knew the huge success she enjoyed came from living in America and the opportunities its freedom and capitalist system gave her. Unlike the Jane Fonda/Susan Sarandon crowd.
