George Jones, dead at 81
TMZ ^ | 4/26/2013 | TMZ

George Jones ... the country music megastar whose heartfelt vocals and close-to-home lyrics defined the genre for generations ... died today. He was 81.

Jones was hospitalized in Nashville Thursday for a fever and irregular blood pressure, though the cause of death was not immediately released.

Jones was in the middle of a tour -- it was supposed to be his last -- when he fell ill. Several dates had already been canceled.

Jones' towering influence on country music was equaled only by his public persona ... which often imitated the melodrama in his songs ... and was well-chronicled in the tabloids. He was married four times -- once to Tammy Wynette -- and made countless headlines for drinking, stormy romances and violent rages.

The wife tells me that he was to appear in a nearby city, and I certainly would have gone to see him.

BTW, my screen name is based on the nickname of “Possum” that I had as a kid. I had forgotten at the time that I used it on FR (2001) that “Ol’ Possum” was George Jones’ nickname.

As Alan Jackson said:

Don’t rock the jukebox
I wanna hear some Jones
My heart ain’t ready
For the Rolling Stones....

RIP, Ol’ Possum, and thanks for all the good tunes.

Best country song ever.

He said I'll love you 'til I die
She told him you'll forget in time
As the years went slowly by
She still preyed upon his mind

He kept her picture on his wall
Went half crazy now and then
He still loved her through it all
Hoping she'd come back again

Kept some letters by his bed
Dated 1962
He had underlined in red
Every single I love you

I went to see him just today
Oh but I didn't see no tears
All dressed up to go away
First time I'd seen him smile in years

(Chorus)

He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away
He stopped loving her today

(Spoken)

You know she came to see him one last time
Oh and we all wondered if she would
And it kept running through my mind
This time he's over her for good

(Repeat Chorus)

Given his past behavior, I would wager that he will be late for his own funeral.

RIP George. You, Johnny, and Hank Sr. were the head trio of country.

Although I will say, unless she leaves you for good cause, ain’t no woman worth holding onto like that.

Loved me some George Jones, grew up listening to him cause my mom loved him. Merle not so much, course I have known Merle since I was a kid and can’t listen to his music without it reminding me what an ass he was. I think he has quit drinking now and is better but man back in the day.....

The Best.

One of my very earliest memories is seeing him in concert.

I was about three years old and I was so crazy about George Jones that my parents and my uncle took me to see him sing.

I remember that it was outdoors on a parking lot and I sat on the shoulders of my uncle so that I could see over the crowd.

May God bless him, and his family and friends.

Just no. I can’t believe it!
I’m so just sad ...he was THE GREATEST!
His music holds a special place in my heart.
My wedding song or “first dance” song was by George Jones, “Walk through this world”.

RIP Opossum.
