Are Duracell batteries actually better batteries, or is it marketing?

I had one of those heavy D-cell flashlights, the kind you have around for a truncheon or light. It came with Everyready batteries that I installed. Never used the thing until one night the power went off during a storm. The flashlight worked well that night, but two weeks later, went it occurred to me that perhaps I should change the batteries for the next unexpected outage, the batteries had leaked, corroding the innards and fusing the threads of the cap. I threw the darn thing away in frustration trying to unscrew the end cap to get the adrn batteries out.

“I never had a Duracell leak, but I suppose it is possible.”

Oh, it’s possible, believe me. Those things have ruined a lot of my equipment.
