Specifically, handgun magazines. Just the bottom, so I can more easily identify what ammo they contain. FMJ vs. JHP, that kind of stuff.
Anyone done this? What sort of paint should I use? I'm worried about the oils and solvents that will come in contact. Not too worried about flaking, as it will happen anyway . . . but I don't feel like repainting often.
Is this even possible? Or should I go with colored tape? Any better ideas?

Since the case is metal you could take a Dremel and mark a design on the case (rectangle, your initials, whatever). Then paint. When the paint is almost dry, take a rag and wipe it off. The paint in the grooves of the design will stay put.
Multicolored paper dot stickers from Staples. You can remove or replace as needed
Don’t know if it would work, but I’ve used fingernail polish on front sights with good luck. I think somebody even makes paint for sights.
Paint your clips.

You bet. I did that for all my personal commercial kitchen equipment when I was in culinary school. Some barstid stole one of my bowls during the pastry practical exam and I found it because of the 'S' (3 dots closely spaced) that I had in everything I took to school.
I dumped his exam in the trash, and retrieved my steel bowl. Chef instructor watched the whole thing and I pointed out my 'mark'.
He failed. I passed.
Don't take my stuff. It's marked so I can find it in the dark.

I would think if you use the sight paint I posted they’ll be pretty bright given the surface you are covering.

lastly, you can order specific colors. I believe if you order individual they were something like $5-7 bucks.

Yep. I use metal snuff cans to store fish hooks and have the tops color coded with dots of nail polish for different hook sizes.
Small piece of silver duct tape on the bottom of the HP mag.

I have painted several pistols which had bad finishes just to keep them from rusting. I did one in metallic blue thinking it would probably look good. Well it looks garish.
Probably just stick to black.
The good things are it is pretty easy to do and it does protect well.
The bad things are that it doesn’t look real good and it wears more quickly than most anything. I have never had a problem with flaking but all the parts that have contact with anything lose their paint fairly quickly.
I have a spray can of Krylon in lime green. I use a Q tip to paint the back of the front sight. That seems to work pretty well.
