I guess I’m not a purist. I consider them still at their peak during the Black Album days. “Enter Sandman”, “The Unforgiven”, “Nothing Else Matters”, “Wherever I May Roam”, and “Sad but True”, are among my favorites.

Still I have to say the highlight of the best show I saw (in the Boston Garden [I don’t even know what they call it now; the name has changed a couple of times iirc]) was One. The whole place got pitch dark, & the sound of a helicopter filled the air. It was eerie & powerful. I’ll never forget it.

That is truly a great rendition, including a great arrangement. The added stanzas are really uplifting, too. Never heard about her and the rendition until after 9/11, when our local talk host would play the anthem to open every day, and mostly it would be Sandi Patti.

Same here. I was familiar with Metallica before the Black Album, but they never pushed my buttons before that disk. In my opinion, it was the pinnacle of their career.

I first heard her in “A Capitol Fourth” with Dolly Parden on PBS. It was something else. PBS never showed much of that Fourth of July celebration, I guess it was too patriotic for them. Great show.

On this we agree. Lars [love him or hate him, & I have to say I’m not too crazy about him] & Hetfield are extremely talented musicians/songwriters. To have demanded they do the exact same original thrash indefinitely wd have stifled them. I know a lot of their original fans wanted nothing less, but that never seemed fair to the musicians themselves.

I’ll never forget the first time I heard Until it Sleeps. The anticipation for that song was something I’ve never seen before. When I finally heard it, I remember being fascinated & let down at the same time. Why did Hammett never let loose & tear it up? I still have mixed feelings about that....

Have you ever heard the story of the first live concert for S&M? The classical musicians had never played before such an audience before, & were scared witless. They thought the fans would stampede the stage & kill them all. ;)

Advanced Star Spangled Banner

Solo electric guitar rendition with major sweetness. Guitar slingers take notice.

No, never read up on that. Mostly, I just consumed the band's offerings, and never really followed the minute details of their career. I can only imagine how a classical orchestra would have felt backing Metallica up!

Star Spangled Banner Martina McBride 02-20-11

The minister's invocation just prior to Martina's rendition is especially powerful.

Boston Bruins fans join in powerful rendition of Star-Spangled Banner

"At the Boston Bruins game, Rene Rancourt starts the National Anthem but then stops singing as the ENTIRE crowd joins in for a powerful rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner. It was the first major sporting event in city limits since the marathon bombings."

Tears....
