An Ohio prosecutor vowed Thursday to pursue murder charges against the Cleveland kidnapping suspect for terminating the pregnancies of the women he is accused of holding captive for a decade.

The prosecutor, Timothy McGinty of Cuyahoga County, also said that he would consider seeking the death penalty.

The suspect, Ariel Castro, is already charged with four counts of kidnapping — three for the women he is accused of abducting and one for a baby that one of the women bore in captivity.

McGinty said he would seek charges for each act of sexual violence, rape, kidnapping, assault and “each act of aggravated murder he committed by terminating pregnancies that the offender perpetuated against the hostages during this decade-long ordeal.”

One of the three women, Michelle Knight, has told investigators that Castro impregnated her at least five times, and that he starved her and punched her repeatedly in the stomach to force her to miscarry, according to a Cleveland police report.

McGinty specifically cited a provision of Ohio law that defines it as aggravated murder when someone causes, “with prior calculation and design,” the unlawful termination of another person’s pregnancy.

I didn’t think they looked good. They looked tough and wiry, but they had to be that way to survive. He fed them enough to keep them alive, as did the German kidnapper who kept a girl for 15 (?) years and guy in California who held a girl for 18 years. Both of them impregnated these girls and there were pregnancies, abortions and some children.

This is such a horrible story. The only worse ones I can think of are the guy who called himself Jet and kidnapped a brother and sister (eventually killing the brother and burning his body in front of his sister, whom he had raped repeatedly for years) and a serial killer (possibly Gacy?) who was almost caught once when a Vietnamese boy he had kidnapped broke away and ran up to a police officer and told him the whole story. The killer came up behind the boy and told the policeman that they were two gay “lovers” having a spat and the officer left and then the killer dragged the poor boy back to his apartment, tortured him and killed him.

It must have taken a lot of courage for this one girl to finally seize her chance, at least in part because she probably feared that nobody was going to believe her.

If the court decides it's murder, then they'll have set a legal precedent that all abortion is murder, as well.

I hope they do.

This is such a horrible story. I just can’t imagine how sadistic and cruel people like this are. Taken in high school and losing the years when most people find a path to follow in life - how does she start over and find a happy life?
