Any alternatives to USGS website? (Earthquake maps)
Posted on 05/10/2013 2:47:43 AM PDT by djf
Wondering if any FReepers know of good alternatives to the NEW USGS earthquake map website. What a POS! (Heavily reliant on Java, it was Beta but they didn't give a rats rear if you didn't like it...)
Basically worthless. Who the heck do we have in charge of IT these days? A bunch of purple-haired freaks who code C++++++++++++-+++----?
Jeesh already!

I totally am with you. I just hope they haven’t jacked the stream/river monitoring too.

If you go to that site and click on "Real time earthquake maps" you get a crapola page with a bunch of listings on the left side and a really crap map on the right side.
It doesn;t compare AT ALL to the previous maps that looked more like this:
It's basically junk. It's worthless! These Java junkies ain't got a clue about desktops or efficiency or anything!
It P's me off because they oughta be able to figure out something from public response but ZIP!, ZERO!, NADA! Jeesh again already!

At the top right of the page
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/ in the black bar you can choose list, map, and options.
Under options you can choose how far back in time you wish to display data from 1 day to 30 days, and you can use your scroll wheel of your mouse to zoom. And you can choose a gray background map, terrain map, street map, or satellite map.
Seems fine to me, and it's fast on my old machine with slow DSL.

I liked it before they needlessly changed it too. I visit it at least once a week.

I try to visit it pretty much daily, to see what’s going on.
But they insist on these stupid-ass changes that you can’t EFFICIENTLY find out what’s happening.
Just like the local weather forecasts. I see the weather guy on the screen. He has a big screen behind him full of icons. He makes a big deal of moving his hand up and touching an Icon. Next we see local traffic or some such bullshit. Why the hell did I need to spend even a half second of my day watching him doing some icon crap?
Sometimes simple is better.
Way better than a bunch of Bozos who are gonna pat each other on the back about the “New, improved” interface!

That does not look like what I got.
I see no problem, but I am interested only in Earthquakes that affect me in the Philippines.
For me, the service looks OK.
I did check the US...No activity today.

I might add. I am on the notification service.
I get an Email if there is something in my area.

I emailed and respectfully asked they return to the previous map. Was politely told that the new system has “more information” but darned if I can see it. Looks like less info to me.

You are right. Part of the problem is too many govt employees, and the desire of the Obama minions to change absolutely everything for no good reason.

I use an earthquake app for my android phone.
Using it I saw the 2 month trend in Russia before the big 8.2 this week

I also prefer the older front end, but I believe the graphics relationships might be better normalized in the more recent version. I’m still drilling into it.
