Disney Princess Makeover Sparks Outrage: Merida Petition Goes Viral

So is turns out that Merida, the rebellious redhead star of Disney’s Pixar film “Brave,” is true princess material after all, and Disney is coronating her as its 11th official princess on Saturday at Walt Disney World to prove it. But wait, there’s a catch. Turns out that Merida’s only joining the royal lineup after a corporate makeover that’s rendered her skinnier, sexier, and more glamorous than her original spunky, tomboyish self—stripping her, at least in some images, of her trusty bow and arrow, and putting her into the very dress that her character detested in “Brave.” It’s sparked outrage among thousands of mothers for whom Merida offered, finally, an empowering Disney role model for their girls.

While I'm not a big fan of Hollywood, Disney, Nickelodeon, etc. role models, I can't deny that it happens and has happened for decades. This makeover does bother me. By the way, my kid's favorite Disney movie is Dumbo-underage drinking, acid trip, racist crows and all! That is one messed up movie.

And what was in the Cheshire Cat’s hooka? I never realized how crazy those movies are until I watched them as an adult. Of course, the adult humor n Bugs Bunny is just awesome.

Maybe they were afraid of the comparisons with Katniss from The Hunger Games.

I went to the site, signed the petition...and the parent website handling the petition is CHANGE.ORG...who “helpfully” suggested I might like to sign my personal information onto five other petitions...supporting Obamacare, “protecting the children” through new gun laws, demanding “workplace equality” for LGBT peoples, Gay marriage, and some other nonsense. I thought I was going to be able to COMMENT on the other petitions as well, so signed on for one...and was kicked to the next, so God knows what kind of mailing lists I must be on now. Just a warning over who the Brave petition will get you into bed with.

Definite improvement, who wants a princess that’s a tomboy any way? Sounds like just a bunch of ugly feminists with nothing much better to do with their time.

Are there any animated Disney/Pixar heroines that DON’T have that smirky look on their face?

I think she’s prettier in the original picture. Plus, as a CCW mom, I like a girl that carries a weapon.

My daughter really likes the Merida character for a number of reasons. I loved the movie Brave also for a number of reasons. What we both loved (and realize my charming red haired Scottish blooded daughter is now 35) is the fact that the story had substance and growth and learning and reconciliation....like so many real life relationships. The characters felt real and substantial. This is such a stupid move by Disney. I had given up on them until Brave came around. Now I guess I expected too much

My daughter’s best friend is a champion of archery, very feminine. She is 11.

She was proud of Merida because it made her feel good that a princess wasn’t just sitting around waiting on a boy, but was skilled.

By your post, it makes me think you think that all girls are good for is looking good for men. While I’m not a feminist, I also take pride in skills performed by girls and women.

Agree.

Maybe Sarah Palin is too ‘tomboyish’ for him.

reading the article it hinted to a leftist bent, so your experience is not a surprise.
