Tenants: Rattlesnakes invade Scottsdale apartments ( AZ )
CBS 5 ^ | May 12, 2013 | Allyson Blair

In mid-March, she was bitten by a Mohave rattlesnake just feet from her apartment while trying to save her cat.

"You can feel it grip on. It's like cutting through butter. It grabbed my thumb and went down through the tendon. When it turned around it nicked me on the other side," said Wallace.

The Mohave's venom put Wallace in a coma. She spent a total of nine days in the ICU and had to be readmitted to the hospital three more times. Wallace was left with no feeling in much of her hand.

A few months prior Wallace told CBS 5 her downstairs neighbor was bitten.

"She was getting out of her car and she stepped out and it bit her," said Wallace.

Snakes aren't just slithering around outside. A man who lives in the complex showed CBS 5 a picture of a snake he found behind his son's crib, as well as another photo he snapped Saturday night of a snake on the sidewalk nearly at his front door.

"If they put in the lease that there are scorpions and bedbugs, why are you not saying we have a snake problem

An artist teaching an art workshop in Arizona told us about a previous workshop where a student berated him for carrying a pistol in his belt. She didn't like being close to an evil gun for fear it might go off.

During the class one day a rattlesnake darted out from under a rock and he blew it away. He said the incident changed her opinion of guns, at least for the rest of the week.

I live a few miles from this location now. However I am in an established neighborhood that’s been here 25 yrs. No snakes, no scorpions, no nasty anything/ Anyone who lives near the city borders and next to a desert preserve are going to run into these things . I once lived next to the desert and would have scorpions, tarantulas and king snakes on my patio plus a pack rat or two. Would see havelina and coyotes, but no rattlers.

Sometimes the wildlife nests in the back yard. Two bobcat cubs by the pool equipment. Mum was out hunting.

When the bobcats were around we had no pack rat problems...:^)

That’s nothing - America’s congressional and White House snakes have put everybody in the nation at risk - not to mention the entire history of American democracy and exceptionalism.

Nah... it's the Raytheon engineers ghetto...:^)

These guys also keep the pack rat population down.

If you have cats, they stay inside cats...:^)

My husband killed a Northern Copperhead today; outside near our garden. Thanks for the repellant suggestions. We’ve seen rattlers in the driveway before; but a first for a copperhead. Our little kitty has been able to pal around with the garden snakes; but she seemed very leery of the one today.

The bite victim wanted the apartment complex owner to post signs telling people about rattle snakes. Posted where, on the western border? Her accent sounded like classic So Cal Valley. Sounded like she was prepping for a law suit.

Note to fellow recent immigrants: Scorpions sting, black widows, tarantulas, Gila Monsters and rattle snakes all bite and there is vegetation here that is meaner than most people where you come from. Adapt and learn to live with it or move to LA.

Rattlesnakes are quite slow when they strike and a cat has no problem playing with one, which is probably what was really going on.

My cat cornered one and seemed a bit put out when I killed it with a shovel. No need to waste ammo on vermin if you don’t have to.
