LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Commuters across the Southland Thursday are being encouraged to ditch their cars in celebration of Bike to Work Day.

The event, which is a part of National Bike Week, is meant to celebrate the power of pedaling as an alternative means of transportation.

There will be free bike checks, drinks and snacks provided throughout several cities at special pit stops.

Those who use Metro as part of their ride to work will be able to take advantage of free rides on DASH and Commuter Express buses. They will also be entered into a contest to win a $700 cycling package from REI.

About 60 retailers will offer discounts to bikers Friday through Sunday.

For more information, visit Metro’s Bike Week LA.

Hmmm, funny, I have always encouraged low information voters to ditch the Obamadork and go to work.

There will also be free rides to the emergency room for those hit by vehicles.

Free referals to attorneys for those robbed and or bike jacked.

Oxygen will be available at the pit stops for those with chronic breathing problems due to ozone injestion or diesal exaust spewing.

I bicycled to commute on a daily basis for roughly 15 years.

Why did I stop? Texting. It’s too dangerous.

These people are as crazy as they look and sound. The last thing we need in Houston traffic are a bunch of greenies on bikes going up 288.

Somebody’s going to get rich with an app that sends a text when the light turns green.

I used to live 35 miles from my work. That was just my primary office. I had places I might need to go that were 200 miles away when I lived in Orange County. Yeah, good luck with that one, guys.

So you ride up to the courthouse to fight a ticket, or file a small claims case. A sign says “No camera phones allowed. Please put them in your car.”

Oops.

I have been trying to ride my bike to work about 3 times a week, up to the point where some knucklehead in a small car rammed my rear wheel and bent it all up. Of course he left.

Hope to have it fixed soon.

Just trying to get some exercise. I have a 10 minute car commute, 30 minutes on a bike. If I didn’t need the exercise...

Don't bike to work in Tampa, Fl, you might get killed... people here do not know what an eight sided shaped sign is...

I love biking, but Tampa is not bike friendly!!

Perhaps we should walk barefoot in chains.

National walk barefoot in chains to work week.

It's not that tough. You can still have one hand on the handlebar when you have your phone in the other one. :-)

I kind of imagine serious bicyclists as sort of a little bit like cultists at times.

In twenty or so years, all those biking, jogging, and cross-training fools, will be half-crippled from the damage done to their bodies.

Far better it would have been to have reduced population growth over the last fifty years, by strictly reducing the number of legal immigrants allowed into America.

That would have meant far fewer automobiles on the road and more space and gasoline for the rest of us.

That’ll be great until you have to deal with 70-plus percent humidity during the summer east of the Rockies and 100-plus degree temperatures in much of California in the summer, too.
