Looks pretty dull to me—we saw those U/I’s in the 1980s on the TI Exploreer Lisp machines.

I prefer, and run, XFCE. It’s a simple, elegant interface, and doesn’t get in my way.

This kind of confirms my belief about the Linux enthusiasts, they have no aesthetic sense whatsoever.
Half of those look like they belong in the 80’s, the others? The 90’s.
This stuff is ugly beyond repair and ranges from MS-DOS quality to the Mac OS pre OS-X in appearance.
Fugly stuff.

Most of these make Windows 8 look good.
And the fonts, my eyes, the fonts.

Background wallpaper is different than Desktop environments.
You can put the wallpaper on any OS. It's how the desktop behaves that's the point of the article.

I miss my 8088, DOS, LOTUS 123 and my 10 meg hard drive (more than I will ever need)

Yeah ... but reading FR on a text-only Lynx browser is kinda depressing.

Well, okay. But at least throw in a copy of WordPerfect 4.2 and an original HP LaserJet+ with a postscript card and a parallel interface.

OK—skins. It’s still just eye candy. It doesn’t affect how the OS, or DE, works.

I prefer, and run, XFCE.I used, and liked, XFCE for a while. Then I tried LXDE and never went back. The thing just screams on a ten-year-old laptop with only 500 MB memory.
