O.J. Simpson's ex-lawyer disputes testimony

The lawyer who O.J. Simpson is claiming falsely represented him in a 2008 trial testified on Friday morning and contradicted much of what Simpson had already sworn.

Simpson, who is currently serving a nine- to 33-year prison sentence for armed robbery and kidnapping charges, alleged that his lawyer, Yale Galanter, provided faulty counsel and is consequently seeking a new trial.

Galanter disputed that notion in a Las Vegas courtroom Friday.

According to Galanter, Simpson had divulged a plan, along with five other men, to retrieve various pieces of sports memorabilia from two industry dealers. Simpson believed some of the pieces were originally stolen from him.

“He said he and some of his boys were planning a sting,” Galanter recounted on Friday. Galanter also claimed Simpson had asked two of the men to bring guns to the confrontation.

At earlier testimony, Simpson denied this point.

After learning of the plan, Galanter claimed he discouraged Simpson from carrying it out.

“He told me he finally had a lead on some personal pictures and memorabilia that was stolen from him years earlier,” Galanter told the Associated Press. “I said, ‘O.J., you've got to call the police.'”

According to Simpson, Galanter had told Simpson he was within his rights to reclaim the items as long as there was no trespassing or violence involved.
