Apple’s Plan to Move Production Back to U.S. Gets Shape

Chief executive officer of Apple this week revealed to the members of the U.S. Senate permanent subcommittee on investigations that the company has invested about $100 million into a production facility in Texas, which will assemble Macintosh computers. In addition, he said that components for the new PCs will be manufactured across various states.

“We are investing $100 million to build a Mac product line here in the U.S. The product will be assembled in Texas, include components made in Illinois and Florida, and rely on equipment produced in Kentucky and Michigan,” said Tim Cook to the Senate committee, reports AllThingsD web-site.

Previously it was reported that Apple’s plan to bring Mac production back to the U.S. is a joint project with Foxconn Electronics, the world’s largest contract manufacturer of electronics equipment. Earlier it was unknown whether Apple wants to make new Macs in California, or Texas, two states where Foxconn has factories. Thanks to the comment made by Mr. Cook, it is now known that the new Apple PCs will be assembled in the Lone Star State.

Mind you since it’s Foxconn they’ll probably bring in their labor force from China for minimum wage.

My guess they’ll use illegal aliens like everyone else. And they’ll have a SSN card on file for each and everyone of them.

And they’ll have a SSN card on file for each and everyone of them.

And about 10% of those will have unique numbers!

A very wise decision for Apple.

Very interesting supply chain issues these days with Far East manufacturing and it anticipates potential issues related to currency trends that could impact domestic pricing of foreign made goods, especially from China.

Apple usually is ahead of the curve on market trends. and may be on this one as well

Anywhere but California.

I hope they are not investigated in Sacramento for avoiding employment opportunities in the Golden State.

They already cost too much!! How can anyone afford them when Apple isn’t using Chinese slave labor to build the liberal-friendly Mac?

If it is indeed FoxConn, it looks likely to be in the Houston area. Apple does have an Austin campus, but I don’t think that’s for manufacturing.

You hit the nail on the head.

I have been in the Foxconn facility in Houston while working for Compaq Computer prior to the HP purchase. Approx 2002.

They did indeed fly their own people in for three month assignments, rotate, fly another group in. All for pennies on the dollar. The toilets were weird, off the floor on platforms for squatting-it was bizarre.

They used to have a plant in Indie, assembly line. however at that facility they employed american citizens.

That is certainly a possibility, considering how nuts the CA legislature is.

I do expect that CA will pass a law that Companies HQ in CA will pay a “fee” on all pretax dollars, to snare some of that $$.

Or to snare campaign contributions, which are worth even more to politicians.

Good for Rick Perry’s Texas! The only bad news (not reported in this story)is the millions of frequent-flyer mile that Apple execs./engineers will no longer earn by flying to The Chi-Coms!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It has always been a struggle to maintain Apple quality using the mainland plants, and that string of suicides among Chinese workers wasn’t making anyone happy. Apple’s got a pile of cash, and like the Fremont plant 30 years ago, the state of the art to come will be deeply automated. Unlike 30 years ago, Steve Jobs’ nutjob qualities won’t be around to manifest themselves at the worst possible time, and the plants will be able to build fast enough and cheap enough to supply the market, or rather, markets, since Apple is in four distinct consumer technology lines.
