Am I Turning Liberal, RINO, or what (Vanity)
5/28/13 | Steve Roden

Posted on 05/28/2013 5:46:53 AM PDT by 2nd Amendment

I need help from the Freeper Community. My entire bean garden was wiped out by a cottontail rabbit this weekend. The rabbit can be seen in my backyard mocking me with her twitching nose. I have been an avid hunter and have killed myriads of game before but I am having difficulty (with my wife's advice) from sending this Obama rabbit to the great carrot garden in the sky. My question is thus: Is my hesitancy in expediting this rabbit a sign of liberal or worse RINO behavior? Am I caving in to the zeitgeist of the times by not putting a .22 into the head of Watership Down resident? My other options are repellant sprays, live trapping, or installing a $100 rabbit fence. If I get any Freeper responses to my dilemna, I will follow their advice (like a true RINO). The fate of Peter Cottontail is now in your hands!

Overkill, Elmer. That wascally wabbit deserves no more than a 410 bore, 7-shot max.

I pop two or three a season from 30 ft and they just absolutely drop with that little shotgun. Crock pot heaven.

No prob Bob. Rabbits are related to rats. Rats with bad habits.
A large ‘rat—with a cute, fluffy cotton tail. O the huge manatee!

Perhaps like me you have lost your blood lust. There are a few predators I will shoot but otherwise I enjoy wildlife. And their lives, often tough, are all they have and I would rather watch them, and feed them, then to snuff out what little they have. Name your critters and enjoy them - except the big bad wolf, coyotes and a few winged thingys.

Your point of view is in synch with mine. As a youth I hunted possums with my grandfather (hence my screen name) but once I plugged a mother possum between the eyes and then saw all her babies, who would surely perish. I there and then lost all interest in hunting and killing God's creatures.

Unlike you, I must add that I would not shoot a wolf unless he was attacking me and that was my only option. And coyotes? I know so many on FR thrill in relating how they kill them. But aside from my general beliefs on killing, how does one get past the appearance of these creatures? They look so akin to dogs.

Pop him with your 22. Then thank Obama for the availability and price of the ammo.

Sometimes they are just too far away for me to get a good shot with my pellet gun, or the pellet might hit them and not penetrate. They jump really high but get away. Other times they are very far away but I still wound them. That slows them enough for my German Shepherd to chase them and catch them and have a yummy meal. The rabbit gets a couple of acres head start on the dog so very often the rabbit wins. My dog goes crazy when she sees me getting the pellet gun.

Sometimes a day or two later I will see a bunch of Vultures out in the yard eating something. I figure whatever I shot a day or two ago finally succumbed. Birds gotta eat too.

Rabbits can really decimate a green bean patch. They won't bother them after they get big but when they first pop out of the ground the rabbits really love them. You either gotta get a fence or a chair and sit in the chair 24/7 until the plants get over a foot tall. We use the fence method.

Dog caught a groundhog yesterday. She didn't want to eat it for some reason and so the Vultures got it. She didn't like seeing the Vultures eating her catch and ran them off once. That worried me. Vultures are big, not quite as big as her but huge birds. They didn't like her messing with them but they took to the air until she left. A dozen Vultures can make a quick meal of a groundhog. They only leave a few bones and a little hair.

I don’t think you have anything to worry about. Compassion for God’s creatures is a conservative value.

Now I am truly conflicted! I had painted myself up with warpaint and was mentally focused on exploding the little rabbit’s head, but now after the last few posts I am reconsidering. Oh, woe is me to be so unstable! I will report tomorrow on the whether the rabbit gets a pardon or commutation or whether he(or she) goes into the stew.

There are plenty of YouTube videos on how to clean and dress rabbit too.

Watch them BEFORE hunting for it.

You are just reclaiming the nutrients from your beans.

If you don’t want to kill the fluffy critter, do what I did. Use a BB gun that can sting the thief but usually doesn’t kill unless your real close. After a couple of years of that, I didn’t even see a rabbit. Running out the door to keep deer away from my flower garden was a lot harder, but they learned to say in the meadow and not the flower garden. It helps with deer to plant flowers they don’t like, Foxglove will kill them they don’t even go near them. A bird cage, cheep at garage sales covers certain flowers rabbits like in the front yard....
