Word For The Day, Monday, June 3, 2013

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “Word for the Day”.

effrontery; noun shameless or impudent boldness; barefaced audacity: She had the effrontery to ask for two free samples. 2. an act or instance of this.

Etymology: from French effronterie, from Old French esfront barefaced, shameless, from Late Latin effrons, literally: putting forth one's forehead; see front ]

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

Practice makes perfect.....post on....

i went to see Great Gatsby with xskids yesterday. xsboy must’ve been bored, i was surprised he decided to come along. They’d all had to read it in school, as i am sure i did, though i had zero recollection of the plot and had to ask them afterwards was it faithful to the book? it was updated with contemporary music etc. It was enjoyable. if i saw the one from the 70s i don’t recall it either. I have to say one thing that struck me and i imagine it was intentional, as an attempt to be faithful to the period— the women were a bit chunkier than is the fashion these days. Not the main characters, but the music acts at the Gatsby mansion were more marilyn monroe-like, than skinny minnies, as far as legs etc.
It was pretty funny when i was looking on moviephone to see how long it was, it said something in the description like; “contains some violent images, sexual content and SMOKING” oh how EVIL that is! guess they couldn’t whitewash out that sign of the times!

And you thought you pampered your pooches! This guy shares my opinion of Ted Baxter. The only thing I can stand about his show is Dennis Miller.

I forgot to add the WFTD of which Ted Baxter is a prime example. Effrontery, thy persona is O’Reilly.

Poor Steve Holt.

I think it was a set-up for next season, who killed Lucille 2.

I try not to get into the politics of that show but I found the whole Drone War bit hilarious.

As to Faceblock, we now have a brand new generation of securities fraud. Ahh like Gange like grandson.

And yes, we are supposed to suspend disbelief on the whole flight to India thing.

Sort of off topic but have you watched the series “The Leauge”

Yikes, serial posting here while just checking back into the thread. My kiddo loved the book and has read some of his others but thinks this is his best. She went with friends to the movie and she was the only one who had even read the book. It wasn’t required for any of them so they didn’t read it. It wasn’t required for me back in the day but I read it anyway and thought it was meh. I did not like them not using music exclusively from the genre. And not just because I am underwhelmed by contemporary urban stuff. Different strokes...

xshub’s niece, who is recently engaged, had a professional photog do their engagement photos. xsteen assures me this is done these days, but it was not done in my day and i think it’s a waste of money. but anyway, they had their’s done during cherry blossom season down at the jefferson memorial, so if you are going to spend $ doing that, i suppose that is a nice location and how they managed to do it without RANDOM TOURISTS in any of the shots, i have no idea! bc that is a major achievement. They had their little dog there with them and i guess a friend to hold his leash, and he would distract the tourists while the photog did a shot etc. They had plenty done with Maxwell in the pic too, and some done of him alone, which were very cute, but clearly it was as an adjunct to their engagement pix. whyisa, i know your daughter had some done, and xsteen said it was very big at UD among the engaged, and one of classmates from St James had it done, but she lives in NYC and had some very artsy ones done with street scenes etc.

yes i read all of his books, along with all of hemingway’s and gertude stein etc. because they were all of a piece with the Jazz Age, Lost Generation, Americans in Paris idea. We talked about it afterwards and only xsbaby’s class had done it as a part of that period and talked about it and watched a movie about that period [Midnight in Paris]. Now that i think of it, i think i read that on my own.

Nope, never heard of it.

You can get your “Buster” fix with Tony Hale in HBO’s “Veep.”

I think you’d like The League on FX, and available on NetFlix.

well this movie has generated a lot of pub too. for some reason i get Brooks Bros advertising in email, and they have RIDICULOUS looking gatsby-esque suits. i thought it was odd bc you think of brooks bros as NO STYLE just fuddy duddy staid and stuffy banker type suits, and this is anything but that. One of the ads had a PINK suit in it!

someone please tell me WHO would wear these things and WHERE?

Portia deRossi or what's her name was in the cancelled much too soon series, "Better off Ted" which was hilarious.

theD i have to say i am sorely disappointed. was she loose? even then, she couldn’t have been cute bc lib women never are.. ; ) i don’t care if a man is an ADONIS with mad skills, i would not touch a lib man with a ten foot pole [were i single etc. etc.]
