Jason Kidd Retires, Leaves $6 Million On The Table

New York Knicks guard Jason Kidd has retired after 19 years in the NBA.

He's leaving money on the table.

Kidd still had two years on his contract. He would have been paid $6 million if he finished out his contract. But after a disappointing playoffs where he looked over-matched against younger opponents, he has decided to hang it up.

He also made $184 million in his NBA career, so another $6 million isn't make-or-break.

Here's his statement (via Alan Hahn):

"My time in professional basketball has been an incredible journey, but one that must come to an end after 19 years. As I reflect on my time with the four teams I represented in the NBA, I look back fondly at every season and thank each and every one of my teammates and coaches that joined me on the court."

Too bad more politicians couldn’t follow his example and retire after they become more of a liability than an asset.

In 2002 the Spurs had a chance to quit Tony Parker (still a rookie kid) and hire Jason Kidd who was putting up better numbers than Parker.

With no disrepect to Jason Kidd - the Spurs made the right call in keeping Parker

Parker is a better and more lethal scorer, no doubt about it.

But will Parker be as good as Kidd when he gets to be the latter’s age?

Yeppers.

As long as Coach Pop is micro-managing his minutes. Look at how Pop has carefully watched Tim Duncan’s minutes. Timmy is 37 and is putting up better numbers than he did last year and the year before.

How in the world is that possible? Its all Popovich’s careful time management.

The key to the Spurs-Heat matchup is Popovich, more than any of his players.

Can a single great player beat a disciplined and well trained team? We will soon find out.
