Re Old Joe's assertion that nobody should be ashamed of mental illness: I'd like to see him have a session with THIS judge. I'm sure that THIS family is plenty embarrassed while the family of the victim continues to grieve.

Killer of woman in Milwaukee park sentenced to life in mental facility -- Son of judge Donegan suffered delusions, experts say

i would not wish mental illness on my worst enemy. it is a terrible scourge and the family suffers more than the victim of it.

Just so you don’t think that I am heartless, my husband and I employ a paranoid schizophrenic in our company. Our employee served 13 years in the Mendota State Hospital for the Criminally Insane in Madison for killing his mother and was released on parole. He had been found “not guilty” by reason of mental defect. He’s been out and re-accepted by his remaining family for at least as many years, but he couldn’t get employment in his field. He’s been a real asset to our company. A psychologist who is a friend told me that he’d never heard of anyone serving 13 years at Medota and getting out.

Our employee is heavily medicated and is religious about taking his meds. But, he must report monthly to a psychologist, a psychiatrist, a social worker, and a parole officer at his own expense. He also must show up for drug testing every 2 weeks. Distance running and training is part of his requirement. He spends his weekends volunteering for St. Vincent DePaul delivering furniture to the inner city.

He’s worked for us more than 9 years, and we assume a huge liability because of the other people working with us who don’t know his background. But, we keep a close eye on him. He’s a little forgetful sometimes (drugs, I’m sure) but he has been a wonderful employee over all. He comes to my house often and works for extra money, although I think he’d do anything we asked for free.

I previously had about 7 years working closely with a Mayor who was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder and who wouldn’t take his meds and who became suicidal. His ex wife actually tried to goad him into overdosing on pills and alcohol and prevented their daughter from calling 911. The daughter called anyway, but that family spent all their time trying to cover up his illness. He’s divorced and teaching school now, but I don’t think he’s stable yet. He refuses to speak to any of his family, or old friends. I wouldn’t trust him as far as I would trust our paranoid schizophrenic.

I saw him on the street a couple of years ago and he was pretending to be a crippled old man. Startled, I said, “Hi, Jim!” as I passed him. My husband said the same. He pretended he didn’t know us. 2 weeks later we got a card in the mail that just said. “I’m an A** H***, Jim.” But, he refuses to answer his phone.

I have plenty of sympathy for the mentally ill, their families, and their victims. But they need to be under the care of professionals. Clearly, Mr. Donegan’s family was willing to let him slide when he was displaying very alarming and dangerous symptoms.

That IS cold-it was 63 here, which is just about an average morning for this time of the year-

The scandals in DC are gathering
Like vultures at a pile of trash
And they will not be quieted
For any amount of secret cash

The shocking revelations have
The attention of the rabble-
Nothing interests them more
Than a lot of lurid brabble

This time, if they listen to
The people who are talking
They’ll see it’s all our funds
Big brother has come stalking...

taking the meds is key, i am sure, and once they are feeling “OK” they think they no longer need the meds and so then they quit and they are not ok any longer. Well bless you for giving the guy a chance, and i am sure it’s a heavy responsibility.

TG our guy knows the difference between life on the meds and life off the meds.

We have another friend (scion of a famous brewing family, but who doesn’t have any access to the money) who won’t take his meds. In the years since we’ve known him, he’s been normal, he’s been suicidal, he shot his teeth out with a gun, he emptied his daughter’s trust fund and ran away to Mexico where he was jailed, he’s lived on the street in Milwaukee, he’s been abandoned by family, he’s picked fights with the police, and on and on.

He’s now working odd jobs and living off some woman in Milwaukee. At least he has a roof over his head. His mother won’t speak to him. We won’t bail him out of jail any more, although we’d speak to him.

Mental illess is a thorny problem.

what do you tv watchers think of game of thrones? of course you know i've never seen it, only heard of it. But i was intrigued in reading this thread to hear it was based on the War of the Roses. Since i am a Tudor fanatic, that has me wondering if i should watch this or read the books? any ideas? you know i am extremely resistant to things au courant, so that mitigates against watching/reading, but i do love me some Tudors.

Never watched it. I surmise from Twitter that they had some startling or stupid development on Sunday.

and why do you, who watch all manner of idiocy on tv, shun this particular show?

No shunning involved. I watch very few dramas and the idea of a bunch of medieval people running around on horses didn’t catch my fancy. Like a Renaissance Faire.

When the guests on Hannity, or OReilly, break down into brabble, I switch the channel to something else.

Like what the definition of 'is' is?

WHen the Carnie spokesman for ODrama doesn't wish to talk about a law broken, he tends to try to sedate the WH rabble with brabble. And the Presstitutes fall into line.

I bought the books for my son last Christmas and we LOVE the series on tv - it is bloody though and sort of more adult fantasy than War of the Roses since it is NOT earth as we know it.....many mystical type things and lands not like anything we know. it did make my husband rethink ever wanting to live in the Middle Ages....his love of swords and chain mail does not make up for living in that filthy time period

Can’t be more ludicrous than Al Franken.

Surprised he’s not floating his other mancrush Bruce Springsteen.
