It started as a drunken pub fight over the outcome of the Premier League title race, escalated into a double assassination and ended with the cold-blooded murder of two policewomen.
But the chain of events that led to Dale Cregan murdering Pcs Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes was rooted in a decade-long feud between two Manchester gangland families in which violence was their main method of communication.
The Shorts and the Atkinsons had traded kneecappings, stabbings and punch-ups before calling a truce in 2009 that was shattered with devastating consequences at the Cotton Tree pub in Droylsden on May 13 last year.
Amid celebrations over Manchester City’s dramatic title win over rivals Manchester United, Theresa Atkinson, the matriarch of the Atkinson family, allegedly lashed out with a bottle and hit Raymond Young, a member of the extended Short family.
He responded with a backhanded slap, according to the prosecution at Cregan's trial, which allegedly prompted Mrs Atkinson to say: “I’m going to get you done by my sons. You just wait here, you’re dead.”

Pc Bone, who was shot up to eight times, bravely tried to Taser Cregan before she was killed by a bullet to the heart which penetrated her body armour.
Pc Hughes, instantly paralysed when a bullet severed her spinal cord, was mercilessly shot in the head three times from point-blank range as she lay defenceless.
As Cregan left the scene he threw a grenade at their bodies.”
Jeez, if they’d only get this worked up over the muslims murdering their soldiers in broad daylight.
Dale Cregan should have swung on the end of a rope, not costing British tax payers for the rest of his natural!!!
The leftie politicians keep claiming that hanging people like Cregan is no deterrent to other murders.
It would deter Cregan from murdering anybody else, as would likely happen if the liberal human rights activists or leftie judges ever get him released or he escapes.
He coudln’t get down to the police station fast enough to turn himself in once he’d shot them so that they wouldn’t kill him on sight when they caught up with him themselves.
The reason he did this was because he was already going down for two drug-related murders, and he wanted to do something to establish his reputation as a big man when he got to prison.
Now he has a whole life tarriff, there is nothing dettering him from murdering other prisoners or prison guards save for maybe spending a couple of weeks in solitary.
Now if their energy could just be redirected toward something constructive, like the Muslim problem.
Do the cops not have guns either?
