In a restaurant in the U.S., the man lets the lady go first as the maitre d’ takes them to their table.

In Germany the man leads, especially if it’s crowded, to either a table or two chairs at an occupied table, where they introduce themselves & are seated. Quite acceptable and my wife & I had pleasant conversations with the German couples we shared a table with.

Actually, it's to keep the guy focused on the woman.
