Forget about etiquette, safety is the no. 1 reason you should always leave a tip. If you don't believe us, ask the unfortunate passenger who was reportedly strangled by his cabbie after stiffing him over the weekend. According to police, the 37-year-old victim was in the taxi at about 1 a.m. on Sunday headed to the Upper Haight. When the cab arrived at his destination -- Waller Street and Central Avenue -- the victim paid his fare, but then asked for change back. This upset the cab driver who thought he deserved a tip.
The two got into an argument over the tip, and at some point the victim walked away. The cab driver, who had already pocketed the change, got out of the car, chased the victim down and started to choke him, said Sgt. Dennis Toomer.
The cabbie then got back into the red-and-white taxi and sped off, according to police. The victim was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for pain to his neck.
The suspect was described as a white man, between 30 and 40 years old. He was about 5-foot-10, with a muscular build and slightly balding hair. He was wearing a polo shirt and jeans, police said. If you know anything about the incident, call the cops on the anonymous tip line at 575-4444 or to send a tip by text message to TIP411 with "SFPD" in the message.
And until the cops catch this abusive cabbie, best you leave at tip after your next ride home.
Its fortunate he didn’t hack his head off.

So why can’t the police find out who the driver was from the cab company? Don’t tell me there are gypsy cabs in Frisco( does it sill P.O. them when you call it Frisco?).

You would think with all the cameras, spying and the like they would have caught this guy in mere seconds.
Not counting times I was there to change planes the last time I was in California was 33 years ago.If I live to be 100 I'll never set foot there again except,perhaps,to change planes.
Have had Chicago cabbies who didn’t know I knew the town try to take me miles out of the way on trips. I called them out and made them drop me. No fare paid. Complaints called in, FWIW (nothing).
Damn freeloaders. If they don’t have the money to tip they should just walk.
