'Tron' to 'Sucker Punch' - 10 bad movies that look great

'Sucker Punch' (2011)

Zack Snyder's 2011 flop is like the video-game fantasy of an oversexed teenage boy come to life, with Emily Browning's Babydoll and her fellow brothel-dwellers (most of them endowed with stripper names like "Sweet Pea," "Blondie" and "Rocket") running through a variety of overstuffed action-movie scenarios in a procession of skimpy outfits that wouldn't look out of place at the Playboy mansion's annual Halloween party. Much like the director's "300," Larry Fong's screen-searing cinematography and some artfully-realized digital effects are breathtaking in scope, but sadly even they can't prop up a limply-realized screenplay and woefully underdeveloped characters that feel all the more bland in relation to the eye-popping visual landscape on display.

KEYWORDS:
There are a few good movies on this list.

I personally really liked Tron Legacy and Terminator Salvation.

Man of Steel was really good and visually stunning. I wonder if it would have ended up on this list?

I liked Prometheus. It had a few surprises I did not see coming. Ridley Scott delivered.

Computer-generated graphics has supplanted story-telling. It saves me a lot of money, since there is very little worth seeing.

I loved Sucker Punch...and Terminator Salvation.

In my opinion that scene in SP where the girls in the B-25 are being chased by a dragon is one of the coolest scenes in all of movie history.

Tron Legacy is much better than I anticipated.

My brother raved about Man of Steel, but I think I've seen enough superhero comic book adaptations.

Aside from Ang Lee's Hulk and the first two Batman films-by Tim Burton-there aren't any that I can recall being must-watch viewing.

I enjoyed “Tron: Legacy” though it certainly wasn’t a great film. The soundtrack really helped it.

“Prometheus” was incredibly disappointing.

“Sucker Punch” looked fantastic but was just a disjointed mess with a terrible, terrible script. I bet it was fun to write and direct, but it certainly wasn’t any fun to watch.

“Terminator: Salvation” was pretty “meh.” I’d put it a little lower than “Tron: Legacy” personally, though it did look good.

Jerks. I worked on Sucker Punch in post production and the story deviated from what people are used to seeing on screen. We always said that SP was a chick flick, and only wives or GF’S or daughters bought their male counterparts to watch it.

I also liked Tron Legacy.

It was a good movie and an instant imprint on popular culture.

the author must be some sort of sundance effete.

I liked the soundtrack for sucker punch. In Tron Legacy, they took someone as beautiful as Olivia Wilde and muted her down. They did the same thing to her in Cowboys and Aliens.

13 needs to shine.

“Man of Steel” is definitely worth seeing....I am not a movie person and thought they did a superb job in remaking the film....

You will not be disappointed..

I thought Prometheus COULD HAVE been a good movie. It failed. I believe Ridley is getting long in the tooth. Alien was an incredibly tense little movie that needed only a minimum of special effects, a gem! His blade runner was great (though i will alienate a few of you by saying i did not like the directors cut...but i generally do not like directors cuts).

Prometheus was me looking at my friends afterward and saying WTF? Weak and predictable plot line with gratuitous effects with little or no purpose.

Alice in wonderland would have been great but for all scenese with the white witch and the feminst ending BS.

it was just a “look we hired johnny depp” vehicle where he plays a stoned manic drunk.

I was disappointed.

It was LOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooong and disjointed.

The writing might have succeeded if they had not been lost in a world of krypton rewrite.

In the end it it just an ancient greek mythology ripoff of heracles.

I would say wait for cable/netflix or whatever costs least.

you could check you emails and look for any interesting FR postings DURING the movie and not mis a single relavent point.

That movie surprised you? I thought it was incredibly horribly predictable, and pretty much said what was going to happen before it did.

Had a strong hunch when I went to look at the list:

Yup! Never saw any of these......looks like once again being out of the mainstream saves wasting your life watching garbage designed for the low info masses.

Not on the list but a poster here once stated that “Daredevil” ( the director’s cut only ) was a fairly good movie. Have yet to check out that one. Said that version was almost a different movie than the bad one most viewed in theaters and on general DVD release.

Sucker Punch looked so good, you didn’t care about the rest of it. Sometimes a movie excells so much in one catagory that nothing else matters.

Don’t you miss heroes? Like my father-in-law: Patton’s Army, Battle of the Bulge, Silver Star, Bronze Star and 3 purple hearts. No computer graphics needed.

I do agree that the ingredient missing in many of these movies was the story. I liked Bonfire of the Vanities but the book is a lot better of course. Alice in Wonderland wasn't awful, just a disappointment.

I think I was expecting a darker more thrilling story and it turned out to be too PG for me.

That was a great scene. All the fantasy sequences in that film were pretty amazing.

I’m glad I watched it on home video, and not in the theatre. The fantasy sequences were amazing but they were so soured by the “reality” sequences that they could not be enjoyed. After about the second one I fast forwarded through to get to the next fantasy sequence.

It could have been a great movie and it wasn’t.

Another one I’d put in that category: the original Casino Royale (1967).

The best stuff seems to be on TV these days: Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones... little by way of special effects, GREAT storytelling.

I liked Sucker Punch, Alice, and Tron. Terminator:Salvation was better than T-3.

I’m ok with well done cgi. Yeah, sometimes it covers up bad acting or weak plots, but i’m not expecting a life shattering experience with every movie.

Just good entertainment...

I liked Sucker Punch. I went to see it for the effects, not the story, and wasn’t disappointed at all.

I would correct the author, however, in that the main characters weren’t “brothel dwellers” but teenage girls in an asylum, one of which (the lead character) was there as part of a frame-up and scheduled to get a lobotomy.

I liked Prometheus. It had a few surprises I did not see coming.

The only thing I didn't see coming was how bad it was going to suck. Sorry, but I don't think I've ever looked so forward to a movie and been more let down than I was with Prometheus.

You liked this film? You're definitely in the minority there. That's OK. I know how it goes. I think I was the only person in the world who enjoyed The Postman.

The trick to keeping the surprise factor alive is to avoid movie reviews, period, because spoilers are the rule rather than the exception.

Sucker Punch is a rare gem, a really good movie on a lot of levels. The protagonist is actually a real hero, even if she didn’t want to be. She has a real mission with real goals, even if they are told via some of the most fantastical scenes I have ever seen in a movie. The movie touches heavily on the theme that the internal battles are more important than the external battles. The villains make sense in their own way.

Is it the perfect movie, no and not by a long shot, but movies are about the suspension of disbelief. The characters and script are sometimes disjointed.

It’s a great sit back with a bag of popcorn and enjoy the eye and brain candy sorta movie.

Why bother?

Kill Bill likewise may have had a striking look, but IMHO, it was a pretty crappy flick, unless you're really into martial arts.
